I read this book years ago before I had my own house and garden. Having this book now that I made the jump to being a homeowner makes me feel like an old friend and amazing artist with an amazing eye for color and detail is with me.

Iconic
Bought as a gift. Own a copy, too. It's wonderful exploration of a certain kind of English life.

so much more than horticulture
i have to keep replacing this as i keep lending it out and no-one ever wants to give it back because it's so much more than a just book about a garden:told by The Gardener himself, this is a tale of determination, genius, graft and love bringing a barren wasteland into haunting, visionary bloom against the odds of geography, accepted horticultural rules and failing health. copiously illustrated with the plant and portrait photography of howard sooley and including diary entries and poems, this is a book that, despite being the last one written by derek jarman and referencing his losing battle with HIV/AIDS, is filled and fills with joy in Life and is one of my very favourite books."I return to Bart's happy, all my little tasks fulfilled""The seaweed's back"

Brilliant
Having seen the garden some years ago and subscribed to the recent appeal to maintain it, I was pleased to find this book. It's a slim volume and I read it in an evening but it's a beautiful book. It's primarily a gentle ramble through the establishment of the garden, how it evolved and was maintained interspersed with occasional glimpses of Jarman's life as it became apparent that his death was not too far away. This does not make it depressing, rather a view that when we garden we garden for the future of the planet. The illustrations are a mixture of photos and sketches, with the occasional poem. I loved it and would recommend it to anyone who loves gardens. If you have a seaside garden you will find ideas in it but it's not a 'how to garden' book!

Derek Jarman's Garden....a masterpiece!
Amazing book, much much more than an 'ordinary' gardening book, a delight to read!Derek Jarman's garden journey, setting up from scratch in the seemingly hostile environment of Dungeness.Starting out from the little beach house he bought for a song..... & then creating a magical haven surrounded by seasonal gardens, studded with 'beach combing' finds & beautiful ,natural sculptures created from re-cycled 'discoveries'. Lots of beautifully written prose & poetic reflections on his life, friendships & the local flora ! Outstanding photographs & images. Highly recommended for gardeners who treasure their own creativity & the creativity of others.

A useful companion to Jarman's "Modern Nature"
A useful companion to Jarman's "Modern Nature". Fabulous garden, wonderful photos. Any seaside gardener should read this. One is left wondering how much of it all survives now, so long after Jarman passed away.
