Not what I was looking for
I bought this book as well as two High School level Document-Based Assessment books by publisher J. Weston Walch. I was looking for books that would help my daughter with her DBQ essays. The book is titled "Teaching and Using" DBQ, but other than a rubric for grading the essay and an answer key for the scaffolding questions in the back of the book there is no information that would help you with your DBQ essay. In contrast, the J. Weston Walch books (DB Assessment for Global History and DB Assessment for U.S. History) include sample essays, teacher comments on sample essays, using information beyond the documents, and a brief description of how to respond to Document-Based Questions for the student. Unless you are a teacher looking for ready made DBQ exercises, this book (Teaching and Using DBQ for Middle School) is not helpful.

Nice Aid For Middle School Parents
This book has great hints as to how one should go about teaching the writing of a DBQ. It is geared to Middle School and any parent who is frustrated about helping a student with his/her work should give this a try. This type of writing is rather new and sometimes a bit of education for the adults helps.

Great document collections
I agree with other raters that the actual questions included with each document are way too easy. However, the collection of 8-9 documents included in each unit surrounding a historical question are well worth the money spent on the book. I usually assign the documents and then supplement them with another assignment, such as an essay, a debate, etc. VERY GOOD BOOK. The time saved not having to collect and compile the documents on your own is well worth it. Has many units covering almost all important historical eras.

Good for Sixth Grade
I teach 8th grade gifted students and the types of questions that go along with the documents are way too easy for my students. I had to create supplemental questions to raise their level of thinking and inquiry. The documents used are also pretty basic and do not require much analysis. I think these would fit more for a teacher who teachers 6th grade American History.

DBQ
The book is good. I would have liked it better if the there were a few articles that were longer.

Skill Builder
A teacher can never have too many of these books. The more you test your students skills the stronger their abilities develop.
