Filmed over 12 years with the same cast, Richard Linklater's BOYHOOD is a groundbreaking story of growing up as seen through the eyes of a child named Mason (a breakthrough performance by Ellar Coltrane), who literally grows up on screen before our eyes. Starring Ethan Hawke and Patricia Arquette as Mason's parents and newcomer Lorelei Linklater as his sister Samantha, BOYHOOD charts the rocky terrain of childhood like no other film has before. Snapshots of adolescence from road trips and family dinners to birthdays and graduations and all the moments in between become transcendent, set to a soundtrack spanning the years from Coldplay's Yellow to Arcade Fire's Deep Blue. BOYHOOD is both a nostalgic time capsule of the recent past and an ode to growing up and parenting. The film won an award at the 87th Academy Award Ceremony for :Best supporting actress

One of the best films of 2014 with good AV quality and virtually no extras.
Boyhood is an unique experiment. It is movie shot over the period of 12 years with the same actors. It is easy to call it a gimmick and dismiss it as an 'awards bait', although it released well before the awards season in summer of 2014. But atleast for me, it was a brilliant cinematic experience. 12 years pass over 165 minutes and yet nothing extraordinary happens. There is no story as such, its daily life. There are no heroes, just characters. There are moments of happiness, sadness, angst, fun, boredom and other emotions we face in our lives. There are people who felt it is long and boring at times, but isn't our life also like that? But I was never bored, I could relate to the lead character Mason and it invoked a feeling of nostalgia. There is no information given about the year, but there are numerous pop-culture references from which you can easily guess which year is going on. The acting by the 4 lead characters is very good and you can see them transforming over the years. Richard Linklater has once again done a superb job. And I like Boyhood more than Birdman and I hope it wins the Oscar for Best Picture. The disc by Universal is good on the technical front. It presents the film in the correct aspect ratio of 1:85:1 (the US release by Paramount was 1:78:1). The video quality is good and I didn't notice any problems in it. The DTS-HD MA 5.1 is also good. Its mostly a dialogue-driven movie and only the excellent soundtrack of the movie makes use of the surrounds. Coming to the one area where this disc lacks - the special features. It only contains a 2-minute behind the scene feature. Its like a short trailer. The US release has a 19 minute 'making of' feature and a 53 minute interview with the cast. For a film shot over such a long period, it required a long documentary and directors commentary. The editing of the film could have posed numerous challenges, so the editor's interview also should have been there. Its very disappointing. There was a rumoured Criterion release, which may or may not come. So I decided not to wait for it. There are plenty of interviews and a 10 minute video on the making of the film on youtube, which one could watch to know more about the making of the film.Considering everything, I would still recommended this release on the basis of the technical merits of the disc and the film itself.

Child to adolescence in real time
Interestingly crafted over twelve years of filming so that characters age in real time. Add a well scripted story and you have the ingredients for a remarkable film. Have already watched it twice and I am sure I will watch it again in years to come.

Expands the art of film, likely to become a film classic.
It is a simple premise - watching a family interact and grow over time. But, if you are in the mood for a film that requires many stunt doubles, green screens, lots of action and explosions, this is not that film. If you want silly humor, a romantic comedy, or Shakespear dialog, this is not that film. But if you want to see a film with a real heart, and be touched by it, this is that film. At the same time you are witnessing true art. This is an example of challenging an art medium to take it to new places that no other form can go. It may already be one of the most important films in a long time. I'm guessing time will deem this not only a classic; but, a redefintion of what a classic can be.It is well acted by the entire ensemble who with crew showed amazing commitment. You just know each person at one point said, "is this worth it? Can I get out? OK, I'll keep going. Let's hope it comes out to be something." It is amazing the camera-work and cinematography felt consistent through the whole film and the editing was superb bridging transitions. It is a hearty experience that will remain in your memories.

Life Is Fleeting
At one point in this film, Patricia Arquette, said to her son, Mason, time has gone so quickly, those fleeting moments from birth to graduation. Indeed, and we go along on this fleeting journey. Most of the time I forgot these people were acting, and became so engrossed in their lives. Mason has his haircut by a stepfather, and I was as broken hearted as Mason. The acting by Patricia Arquette, Ethan Hawke, Ellar Coltrane and Lorelei Linklater were just superb.Richard Linklater, writer and director, began a journey that took 12 years. We watch as Mason and his sister, Sam, grow up from childhood to college. Many moments hit home, been there and recognize it. Emotional roller coasters prevail, like life as we know it. This family became my next door neighbors, old friends, so happy to see the children in their special moments in life. I won't give anything away, there is so much to cover in 12 years. However, two hours and forty-five minutes are well worth this film. Good bye neighbors.Highly Recommended. prisrob 02-20-15
