One for the fans
There's nothing wrong with being a Jimi Hendrix fan, in fact I'm one and seem to spend an inordinate amount of time trying to persuade people of his genius. However this is squarely aimed at those of us who have to have another three versions of "Dolly Dagger" or "Freedom". Recorded in Summer 1970 at Electric Lady Studios these are largely works in progress as he tries out the songs that mostly appeared on "The Cry Of Love" and "Rainbow Bridge". There are also a few completely new (to me) tracks, not least the "Long Medley", a 26 minute studio jam which is absolutely brilliant.Anyway if you're a fan you have to have this. If you're not this isn't the place to start. And just to echo the other reviews, the packaging is flimsy and the CDs hard to extract (the booklet is good though).

"A Wizards Vision"
The lord of the strings, in his own studio.Excellent various studio session recordings, bringing to life Jimi's extraordinary creative processes in a studio environment. It really is like being there..and listening in to a master at work. The structure to the songs really come to life, and are a very privileged experience to behold.A truly wonderful set...which includes a superb documentary on the history of Jimi's masterpiece. This is a must own release, to all collectors of Jimi's music legacy. To James Marshall Hendrix...Shine...on..

A wonderful set!
If you're new to Jimi, this certainly isn't the place to start, but if you're an ardent fan who's constantly trying to gain a better understanding of the great man's genius, this is a MUST own! It's a beautifully presented set, with a very large number of alternative studio takes and versions - just awesome...

Jimi in his own playground: sadly all too briefly.
I have been a fan of Jimi's music ever since hearing Hey Joe back in late '66 when I was 10. In my collection, i have the lot. Firstly on vinyl and videotape, and again on CD and DVD/Blu-ray. Musically speaking, the opportunity to hear many of the final completed Hendrix songs in their demo and early work-in-progress form is fascinating and rewarding. On CD1 for example, Astro Man take 14 and The Long Medley are stunning. The documentary on the Blu-ray disc is informative and very well put together and features input from lesser known second engineers at the studio which was pleasing. I thought it a shame that mixing work done in the past few years on some.of this material was not done at Electric Lady. That's a taster of the good stuff to be had on this release. Now for the bad - the product packaging is terrible. Thin card outer slipcase should have been thicker, the softback book should have been hardback, and as for the foldout CD holder - whoever thought this was a good idea needs to find another job. The slots are incredibly tight and it is impossible to extract a CD without getting a very tight grip on it. Thus far CD1, after the initial insertion at the packing facility and my one extraction to play it is showing light scratches on the surface. The same will no doubt follow for the other two CDs in due course. At least the Blu-ray disc has a card cover to protect it. Why could this release not have been packaged in the same style as the excellent West Coast Seattle Boy bookset of several years back? But I already know the answer to that: cost penny pinching. This Electric Lady set is poor in comparison, and likely a lot cheaper to produce. For £60, this release is overpriced. When I compare it to the likes of the excellent Jethro Tull bookset releases that are a model of consistent, quality presentation, this release I'm sorry to say falls short. Long suffering Hendrix fans deserve better as let's be honest, this material is not intended for the casual, curious purchaser of Jimi's music. In summary, the School Report for Experience Hendrix would read: Must Try Harder!
