Howard Hughes – His Life and Madness

Quite a big book but there was lots to fit in. The research that went into the book must have been tremendous and the detail is awe inspiring. A fantastic read and I couldn't put it down. My only criticism, if you can call it that, is that it would have been good to know what eventually happened to Howard's Estate although the book was written relatively soon after his death and it may have not been settled at the time of publication. An update of the subsequent Court cases would have been good. Otherwise I would highly recommend this book.

Outstanding

I'm fasinated by the life of Hughes, so looked forward to this book greatly. It starts well with his boyhood history giving clear insight into why he became so obsessive about his health in adulthood. A third way in, the book nosedived for me! I knew Hughes business transactions would need discussing but oh my! Chapter after chapter of over-detailed accounts of business deals, including all the business men involved. A little over the top and unfortunately, Hughes is hardly mentioned at times.I ended up skim reading, only stopping when Hughes was actually mentioned. Three stars for being well researched, minus two for the boring over detail

As another reviewer pointed out, this book is incredibly detailed and painstakingly researched. The author has taken great care mapping out the entirety of the Hughes empire, including his ties to a who's who of Hollywood, politics, the mob, and beyond. If you have the patience for it, this is a fascinating read. The sheer magnitude of HRH's influence, even when he had become a virtual prisoner of his own design, is mind boggling. True, there is a staggering amount of information to digest but, such is the life of billionaire industrialists. Whatever his eccentricities, Hughes accomplished more in one life than most could ever dream. It is worth wondering, what he may have been capable of had his addictions and mental instability been kept at bay.

Interesting read especially after seeing the film

Well written and informative. The overall impression is how a great man frequently comes along in America, involved in many pursuits and highly productive, only to be denigrated by the government. Can anyone say "Elon Musk"?

Very well researched book however the story is melancholy as Hughes was a very wealthy man but led a reclusive and lonely life
