amazing story telling and all the themes of great literature
I teach the full blown Odyssey to my PreIB sophomore students. In one piece of literature you get history, religion, amazing story telling and all the themes of great literature, not to mention epic poetry and all the literary techniques any pedant could dream of if that is your focus. My focus is the nature of man and the wonderful themes that resonate over thousands of years, not necesarrily the hero's journey what most anthologies seem to settle on when looking at Odysseus trying to sail home. I prefer examining the complexity of this great text, the many themes, the idea of home, women's rights, deception, what it means to be civilized, pride, suffering, loyalty and more. My students balk at first ,but usually by the end of the work, they are proud of their own journey, have ideas to share and have developed some skills how to reach home themselves.

Tales of Brave Odysseus
I thoroughly enjoyed this translation of Homer’s epic poem, for its readability. An added value of this kindle book was the look-up feature, which was so helpful with all the character names and geographical locations in the narrative. A good foundational read for Hellenistic and western culture!

Excellent prose version of the book
Excellent prose version of the book. It's readable and understandable. I used it for a MA course. It will probably be great for better understanding the regular verse version.

Not what I would consider unabridged.
This was not the original Samuel Butler version as is on Project Gutenberg. I was rather disappointed by this fact. Names were changed to different gods. Well, it makes it not a public domain version. After realizing my error, I'd already marked up the book and couldn't mail it back. Had to replace with a different book.If you need one with the classic gods that are up to date for school, this might be good for you. If you need the public domain version, go with the public domain version. In this one you have Zeus, Athene, etc, instead of Jove, Minerva, etc. No thanks.Unabridged as defined: "un·a·bridgedˌənəˈbrijd/Submitadjective(of a text) not cut or shortened; complete."an unabridged edition"synonyms: complete, entire, whole, full-length, intact, uncut, unshortened, unexpurgated"the unabridged version is in two volumes"Synonymous with "intact" and "unexpurgated" "entire" "whole" "complete" "uncut"...Can you imagine your favorite movie having character names changed and they kept the name of the playwright? Yeah. Exactly.

A machine translation?
Another review said "This was not the original Samuel Butler version as is on Project Gutenberg."Well.... no. It is a comically mangled version, maybe machine-translated back to English from a Russian translationof the Butler version. Unreadable. Don't buy this one.

Illustrations are striking
I already had a copy of the Odyssey on my kindle but I really like the illustrations that go with the age old story. A stroy I hadn't read since junior school: a long time ago.

One of the oldest...not that it shows!
This really is a fantastic translation with dramatic illustrations. A great big episodic journey, like the best road movie ever!
