Is this keyboard back-lit, and do the extra editing keys work with Word, or just Pages?

Not back-lit. You can set the keys how you prefer within word and other apps.

Is this compatible with the macbook pro M1 2020

I would say so as it is compatible with my 2019 Macbook Pro 13inch. Its a Bluetooth connectivity so I cant see why it wouldn't work with any mac.

should i even bother or would i not like it just to confirm i like mechanical keys long travel and good feed back

I don't think this one will give you the sensation you looking for in term of feed back and mechanical keys feeling. its a very good keyboard but its more towards smooth than mechanical and feedback kind of keyboard.
