Handmade Kirtland's Warbler Totem Round Porcelain PendantKirtland's will only nest at the bases of young jack pine trees, where the trees are 5-16 feet tall and spaced to admit sunlight. Cowbirds often destroy warbler eggs, laying their own eggs in the nest, which the warblers unwittingly raise as their own. Kirtland's migrate over 1500 miles from the Great Lakes region to overwinter in the Bahamas. Although their numbers are recovering, Kirtland's warblers may always require human protection and habitat management. Did you know? A rare bird of the Michigan jack pine forests, the Kirtland's Warbler is dependant upon fire to provide the small trees and open areas that meet its rigid habitat requirements for nesting. It is commonly referred to as the jack pine warbler. It nests on the ground under living jack pine branches. Management of jack pine forests includes clear-cutting, fire, replanting, and reseeding. Migrating at night, this wood warbler can come in contact with towers and other high structures. It spends the fall and winter seasons in the Bahamas.
