Paintstiks on Fabric: Simple Techniques, Fantastic Results

Must Have for Newbies
I'm new to paintstiks and they are very pricey. I didn't feel comfortable just experimenting so I looked around for a couple of books to help me out. Painstiks on Fabric is a very good introduction to using the Paintstiks on fabric and includes several basic techniques: direct application, stencil brushes (a must have), rubbings and stenciling. The creative fiber artist can then extrapolate other methods for the painstiks. Even more importantly the book includes information on heat setting and clean-up. A nice touch. However, I discovered that a lot of this information is available for free on the Canyon Textile website and that the site includes some free patterns and projects that the book does not include. And the book wasn't cheap. So, good information but not quite enough of it to justify the purchase of the book and that is a shame as the writer and owner of the company are obviously passionate about their product and the uses to which it can be put. A reluctant four stars, but I do recommend the paintstiks themselves and the company I am just a bit tepid on the beginning information in the book.

Limited but good information
I watched a few videos to get ideas of how to use the paint sticks. However, none mentioned the caveat against drycleaning fabrics after paint stick application. This book prevented a large future headache.

Paintstiks last!
Basics to uses! This does it all and gives you great info on paintstiks. Even though I think they are expensive (don't bother with the minis--they are only 1/3 of the large ones) they are well worth it using them in conjunction with this book. Rubbings, shading, painting--they go with all. I use them on wall quilts, clothing and landscapes. They are great on fabric and paper. The book explains everything in detail and gives you good ideas how to use them and how to make them permanent on fabric. This is a great introduction and resource book. If you are looking for advanced material, find another.
