A decent read for a deer stalker but by no means a reference book to keep going back to
I have just finished this book by Graham Downing, it only took a few hours to read but was enjoyable. The only thing I really learnt was some of the muntjac history in the UK and the section on calling with a butolio was good, although should have been far more in depth with techniques and possible scenarios such as what to do if muntjac numbers are at a low density, high density etc. In fact that section read like a short Shooting Times piece and low and behold there it was in this weeks issue (7\09\2014).It is a nice glossy hardback book that you will read once, nice present for a stalker for Christmas but not a reference book that will be turned to time again. It would have been nice to have included a section on biology, feeding habits and perfect habitat. He refers to scientific research about muntjac behaviour during the few hours after dawn, it would have been nice to have had some more information on that. What research and when and where was it undertaken?I'd it had all those things it would have a 5 star rating from me.

For the novice or experienced stalker
Very informative. Useful introduction to muntjac stalking. Great book worth a read, whatever your existing level of stalking experience.

It covers the basics for the novice as well as some useful information for a more experienced stalker
This book is an interesting read. It covers the basics for the novice as well as some useful information for a more experienced stalker. There is good information on the animal and the author is clearly a lover of muntjac as a sporting quarry. Some great information on both history of muntjac in UK, muntjac behaviour and a brief talk of management for trophy quality, something rarely discussed in regard to muntjac. I think there are too many stories and recollections to fill the book But all in all a nice book to have on the shelf in regards to muntjac as a game species, which of course they most certainly are!
