Albatross: The True Story of a Woman's Survival at Sea

Very Good Read!
A good read and a quick one too. The writing flows and events quickly chase one another from one page to the next. A true tragedy however, like so many, man made by poor decision making. The Captain appeared to this reader to be a drunk who also behaved irresponsibly. He also accepted a crew member on board, Mark Adams, who was either insane or disturbed but either way, a real piece of work who ended up with the sharks. Ms. Kiley who survived this awful incident along with another crew member was clearly extraordinarily skilled at such a tender age. Her navigational and nautical experience and skills were commendable. A strong young woman to be admired with a warning to all others. The ocean and all sailing adventures are not to be taken lightly. A real shame Ms. Kiley is now deceased.

An easy read
This book was written by my husband's cousin, about her experience. It is an easy read if you want something to read over a holiday weekend.

A great true story read. A must for all sailors to read.
A great true life story. I knew 3 people on the crew and it sounded very true to what really happened that day. Hopefully it doesn’t scare people to good outright of land but this book will show you the seriousness of it all.

This is an excellent read.
This was a book I listened to on tape years ago but had to get a copy and read it. The woman in this book was 22 at the time, very young to go through this kind of trauma. We know by her comments as she got older the incidents affected her life and stayed with her. For those with a spiritual side, it was very disturbing how some in the group remained hostile towards one another. This is an excellent read.

Chilling -- good read
I saw this story on 'I shouldn't be alive' and was riveted. How did anyone survive? Author is an amazing person, the book is really good.

Never a happy person but she sure could tell a story
This book had me riveted. I looked up the author and saw that she died fairly young. Never a happy person but she sure could tell a story.

Loved this book. Although I knew how it ended, I was still on the edge of my seat reading this. Couldn't put it down.

Short Story and No Pictures
This is a well written book about Sea Survival. I'm giving it 3 stars because it's really short so it takes about 5 hours to read the entire book. Also, there are no pictures in the book. Just one picture on the jacket of the author. So its pretty slim on content. I did enjoy the book which is about Deborah Scaling Kiley's experience sailing a yacht called the "Trashman." There were five people total on the crew and the yacht sank in a storm due to crew negligence and drunkeness. They were adrift in a Zodiac with no supplies or water for five days before being picked up by a ship. 3 of the 5 people died! In my opinion the deaths would not have occurred if they had worked together at survival better. They all just basically laid around and bickered instead of working on any significant survival tasks. It is a fascinating and tragic story of what can go wrong while sailing on the ocean. If you are looking for top notch sea survival books, try "Spirit of the Rose Noelle" and "Survive the Savage Sea."

True story
Unbelievable what the author went through. Floating aimlessly in shark-infested water must have been horrifying. A very good read.

Good read
I liked the book a lot and read it through in a couple of hours. Found out later that the author, Deborah Scaling Kiley, died last August and felt sad.
