Brilliant Book
Brilliant - Stephen Hunter is my favourite author & his Bob Lee Swagger novels are all excellent - Definitely worth reading as are all the others.

We had Bob Lee and Earl, now granddaddy Charles F Swagger is taking names and kicking ass,
This is a big big improvement on the last few books, which, though readable, seem to have lost a huge amount of sheen. Raw and exciting again.

Great reading avec a look at the 1930's.
The Mid-west comes alive with mooks and molls, dollfaces- and an absence of a wish to mention Shirley Temple- as The Old Masters of bankjobs work en plein air to evoke 'le vie du takedown'. This isn't Ford Madox Ford, this is Thompson Stephen Thompson, with great phrasery like-"shooting at nowhere and hitting it precisely"- and "taking a swim with a refrigerator". The Grumleys were back- with Michael Bolton haircuts- and they were a great addition to pique and scratch the surface of contemporary american life.

I'm ALL IN on SWAGGER
Having read all the other Bob Lee SWAGGER novels, this one was a no brainer. Now getting to know three generations of SWAGGER, it begs the question of exploring Charles and Earl's relationship further.A great read that passed a week of vacation nicely. Recommended.

The Swagger Legend Grows With Bob Lee's Grandfather Taking On The Gangsters of 1934
Longtime fans of Stephen Hunter's Bob Lee Swagger series should find "G-Man" an intriguing and provocative extension of the Swagger clan as Bob Lee researches his mysterious grandfather, sheriff Charles Swagger-father of Earl Swagger, Bob Lee's father. Just as Hunter introduced Earl Swagger stories to add to the Swagger legend, he now introduces readers to Charles Swagger whose life has been pretty much hidden from Bob Lee by his father, Earl. Who was Sheriff Charles Swagger besides a WWI war hero and a seemingly disgraced sheriff of a small county in Arkansas? "G-Man" tells the backstory of how Charles fell from grace as one of the greatest gunmen and opponents of evil to a disgraced heavy drinking small town sheriff. When a long forgotten trunk is unearthed on Bob Lee's property containing unexplained items such as a tarnished badge, a gun, map, and several other strange items that dated back to his grandfather, Charles, in 1934, Bob Lee makes it his mission to research and find out the truth about his grandfather. "G-Man" actually tells two parallel stories through alternating chapters. First the story of Bob Lee and his friend Nick Memphis as they try to learn the true story of Charles Swagger and solve the mystery of how he was or wasn't a part of the fledgling FBI in 1934 and whether or not he had been involved in shootouts with some of the most nefarious gangster icons of the thirties such as "Baby Face Nelson", Pretty Boy Floyd, John Dillinger and other public enemies. Secondly, is the first hand story of Charles interacting with Melvin Purvis, and many infamous gangsters told from various points of view by the participants.Regular readers of the Swagger series will know that this is not the first time Stephen Hunter has intermingled his fictional characters with real life characters and it certainly heightens and intrigues the reader in "G-Man". Hunter creates powerful characters and supplies them with the proper idioms, habits, and dialogue of the 1930's. Readers feel as if they are actually witnessing the bank robberies or extended chases we've seen in so many movies of that era. Hunter's extensive research pays off in wonderful portrayals of some of that period's most famous and infamous characters."G-Man" is a fine addition to the lore of the Swagger family and ultimately, readers will discover much of the intelligence, bravery, and devotion to law enforcement that was passed from Charles to Earl and later to Bob Lee. I happen to enjoy fiction that incorporates the real characters and events of the times with the fictional (Forrest Gump, anyone?) and Hunter pulls off a credible and believable tale that will have readers stopping to catch their breath at times. Great story line, tight plot, deeply fleshed characters, deadly action scenes, and several mysteries all unite to make "G-Man" a great read.

Just what i have wanted a good novel about a fascinating period in American History. Im an old Swagger fan of 20 odd years and its pure escapism and fun. Love to see one about a Swagger back in the days of Wyatt Earp and friends!
