Product Description Plug Plants What am I buying IMPORTANT! - These are PLUG PLANTS , NOT potted plants. Plug plants are small, young plants grown in cell trays. Even the largest plug plants, described as extra large or jumbo are still small plants from cell trays and not established plants. We also offer our range of plants in larger sizes which gives the option to choose premium plants at a more advanced stage. Please visit our shop for our full list of plants currently in stock. What to do when they arrive. We recommend starting plug plants in a small pot and not planting directly into open ground or large pots/planters. You will want a plant pot roughly the size of a tea mug, commonly referred to as 7cm or 9cm pots. Ensure the pot has plenty of holes underneath and preferably over two tiers for even better drainage. Fill the pots to just below the rim with a good quality multi purpose potting compost. Place the plant into the compost but avoid pressing down too much, a little shake can help ensure there aren't any major air pockets. Ensure you water thoroughly, however, it is vital that the compost is allowed to dry down before watering again. It is this process that will encourage faster root growth for most plants. Allow the pot to get lighter before repeating. Continue this process of watering thoroughly but not too often until you see roots through the drainage holes. The plant is now ready to be potted on. Plant Types (see bullet points above) Annual / Biennial An annual plant is a plant that completes its life cycle, from germination to the production of seeds, within one growing season, and then dies. Biennials will grow in their first season and set seed in their second. Herbaceous Perennial Herbaceous plants - especially small flowering plants -grow and bloom over the spring and summer, die back every autumn and winter, and then return in the spring from their rootstock. Deciduous Deciduous plants are those that lose all of their leaves for part of the year, usually in the autumn/early winter, with leaf growth returning in the spring. Evergreen An evergreen is a plant which has foliage that remains green and functional through more than one growing season. These plants provide year-round colour and interest. The boxes we use are designed to fold and hold plants in place without the need for any extra packing material and are also fully degradable. Pesticides At the Nursery, we are committed to only using natural methods of pest control and we monitor our plants daily so we can quickly react to any major pest issues. Our methods include spraying aromas such as garlic to deter pests or simply manual removal. While this is not the most cost-effective way, we believe it is essential for the environment. Peat While some of the plants which we order contain peat, we are proud to be completely peat-free in all our in-home production at the nursery. Peat is formed in bog lands over many years. However, the rate at which it is being used commercially and in the home garden has damaged natural ecosystems considerably.
