Signs of Resistance: A Visual History of Protest in America

Perfect Book For Our Times
I give this book as a gift to anyone who I'm trying to inspire toward activism or support in fighting the power--especially any young person. This is a rich visual history of the ongoing struggle for equal rights and justice. Even though I have lived through many of the events that are referenced, I still didn't know about many of the connections that Siegler makes. You start to see that this has been an ongoing conversation, where one movement is picking up ideas and bringing them to the next. I originally discovered this book when I was in a place of despair and I found it oddly comforting to be reminded of struggles from the past and inspired by the bravery, wit, and creativity people have brought to the fight. Now, where everything seems to be happening at lightening speed, I think this book is an important reminder that that the urgent call for justice didn't begin a few weeks ago--the battle has been raging through out time. I love this book and all the thought and care that went into it.

Five-star book with a small problem...
OK, this book is fabulous...with one flaw. I'm as liberal as they come but in the third chapter (then sprinkled throughout) the author makes her bias clearly known by calling a poster by women AGAINST suffrage "nutty" because they mixed serif and san-serif fonts and had extended and non-extended type. I would like to know what the definition of "nuttiness" is and if these women exhibited it in this poster, then lots of others did, too. There were other examples of these slight "digs" at those the author doesn't agree with and to me (a nit-picker of the very worst kind!) it dragged the integrity of the book down a bit. But again, I LOVED it, it is a very informative and thought-provoking book, had images I have never seen before and I would highly recommend it but...caveat lector.

too biased for classes
this is a great collection of images and glad it exists, but at times it's too biased / left leaning to be assigned to students

Fantastic
This book is a great collection of signs, posters, slogans and other collected work of art showing how people over the years have attempted to rally others and show support for a cause or against a cause. Well designed and very interesting

Picture book for activists, and those that love them
I bought this book as a gift, and while of course she said she loved it, I knew this time it was true. She is a sign maker, and a marcher, and a lover of books you can hold in your hand. I loved it, too.

Interesting & well made
Super cool and interesting book. It’s also very nicely made and has a quality feel to the pages. They used a smooth, heavy stock with a matte finish. So even though it’s paperback, it’s definitely coffee table quality.

Fascinating Visual History
Fascinating visual history of resistance, going way back, into today’s world. We’ve poured over this book for hours and intend to pass it on. Nearly all of the photos/works/posters were new to us. Credit is given to the designers/publishers.
