First Turkish Reader for Beginners: Bilingual for Speakers of English (Graded Turkish Readers)

Really a 4.7. I like it overall, I'm learning from it. My only beef with it is that the English translation is in such light print it can be hard to read.

I love the approach that this book takes. It slowly builds up vocabulary and grammar very effectively. I have other resources which teach grammar, great references, but this book puts those grammars into practice. After the first few units I find yourself not looking at the side-by-side English but actually reading the Turkish and getting instance satisfaction from being correct when I peek at the English. Lot of white space for making notes. Best purchase I've ever made in my pursuit of the Turkish language.

This is just a quick comment. I love the book. It is really for the beginner--and gradually introduces new grammatical forms. The subject matter deals with day to day living--not travel. It has a dual language dictionary in the back. It has no grammar information, so the learner still needs a grammar book. It was listed in Amazon as "Volume 1". My question is: When is Volume 2 coming out. This is a GOOD purchase.

Perfect for beginners with translations and lots of helpful vocab and examples of usage

Apart from the other reviews, this will come as an eye opener. I bought this book to solidify my Turkish learning endeavor. At first I absolutly loved this book. The philosophy of the method is great. But, as I started with some other supplementary sources to learn the basic grammar concepts, like word order and proper case endings, I discovered that this was riddled with mistakes. I was dumbfounded at the translations after getting a month into this. Newbies won't see the mistakes at first, but I had a native point out that this is horribly written and will teach you the wrong way to understand and use the language. I feel like the author put his stories into Google translate and this popped out. I give it two stars because the vocab lists in the A sections are legit, but the readings in the B sections are complete garbage. Burn this if you have a copy!

As Z. Preston says in his/her review, it feels like the author used Google Translate a lot when preparing this reader. First of all, in Turkish you would NEVER say" Bu öğrenci bir kitaba sahip"--This student has a book. The Turkish sentence provided is just a Google translation of "This student has a book". In Turkish, you'd actually say "Bu öğrencinin bir kitabı var." There are several mistakes on the very first page. And inconsistencies! Unbelievable! Sentence 1 and 15 have the same grammar structure in English "has/have" and yet, Turkish translation of those structures are different: sahip vs. var. This just alone shows me that this is not the book to learn Turkish grammar from. This book also has a German version so I wonder if they just used Google translate to make an English version of this book.
