Red Hulk: Mayan Rule

Silly story
The storyline was silly and the artwork was ok. Not the best red hulk story out there. Actually it’s one of the sillier ones I’ve read. Only for completists.

Fantastic Art and A Great Story
The cover art alone is fantastic you have the art from issues 53 to 57 inside and there are extra goodies in the book I did not find in the original comics. Believe me I purchase a ton of comics. I had Hulk number one in my hand when I was a little boy and paid 35 cents. Wish I still had it however this book brings some of the excitement into play. I am very happy I purchased it as it has the complete story line in one spot. There is art showing the Defenders crew and I am a fan of Doctor Strange who appears to battle the various Mayan Gods.

Fantastic art
First and foremost, the art by Dale Eaglesham is wonderful. His panels are dynamic and fitting for this title. The story however is pretty lame. Too much exposition for a situation in which you know how it will turn out. Added to that is the conclusion that makes little sense. The idea is fine but Jeff Parker has done much better work in the past. Overall, a beautifully drawn book with a lackluster plot.

The Hulk versus radation-sucking Mayan gods? Seriously? Pathetic...
Title: Hulk: Mayan RulePublisher: MarvelWriter: Jeff ParkerArtists: Dale Eaglesham (pencils, inks, covers), Jesus Aburtov, Val Staples (colors, covers)Collects: Hulk #53-57Price: $16.99I have to admit that I was not a fan of the whole "Red Hulk" concept, at first. Though I've come to accept the concept and appreciate the character, I am really not that interested in this character as the lead in an on-going title. Having not read any of the previous storylines that come before this one, I am really not sure how this character came to be in a leadership role of this group of "hulked up" characters and Machine Man. It was actually the cool-looking cover of this book that led me to pick it up at the library and give it a try.I've never read anything that was illustrated by Dale Eaglesham that hasn't looked great. Visually, his style is a lot like that of Gary Frank. In case you have no idea who that is, trust me and know that it's a compliment. (Or better yet, go read Batman: Earth One to see for yourself what kind of artist Frank is!) This book is no exception. The artwork is all high-quality. All of the characters (and there sure are A LOT of them!) look like you would expect them to, with Hulk looking especially big, muscled, and powerful. Aburtov I'm not familiar with, but Staples I am. Both colorists do a great job bringing the images to life. High marks for this art team.As for the story... well, I just didn't care for it. Jeff Parker is a pretty creative guy, and I can give him credit for doing something a bit new in creating the characters/villains that he brings to the table, here. The problem is I just don't care for them. A super-powerful pantheon of Mayan gods who plan to take over the world? No. That's even stupid to just say it out loud. The characters - while creative - are just not all that interesting and certainly not anything too believable - even from a comic book universe standpoint. I just really didn't care for this plot at all.One other thing - there's a woman in this story line who apparently is some sort of robot life-model decoy or something. She is part of the team of Ross's good guys, and he seems to be falling in love with this robot gal. Again, this is just really stupid. Jeff gets an "A" for effort, but scores an "F" for the final product. The whole story is just weird and dull.In short, this book does little to make me want to pick up any other Hulk books that came before this one or will follow it. There are many, many choices out there that are better are than this. This isn't a book that is worth spending any of your money on.Writing: 3/10Artwork: 8/10Cool Factor: 1/10Value: 2/10Overall: 3.5/10

comic review
amazing artwork within this book and on the front cover, but a bit short, if the story had gone into more depth with the mayan gods it would have been a 5/5 but because of this its 4/5 still a good book but just needed a bit more depth.
