Fab for a Mini Pond, Water Feature
This was perfect for me to create a water feature/mini pond on my patio. I rent my home so a permanent feature wasnโt possible for me to build in the garden. By creating one with this bowl, I now have something that I can pick up and move easily when I leave. It was really easy to set up and I love it! The bowl is a perfect size, 90 litres, sturdy and deep enough for what I wanted. I created a pond/rockery above ground on my patio, but this bowl could easily be dug down into the garden, and a similar set up could be created around it, or if preferred a more permanent feature accordingly. Delivery was great, and I can definitely recommend if youโre looking to create a water feature in your home and at an affordable cost. Iโm also a woman in my late fifties, and this was a simple weekend project for me. Set up & Plants. I purchased some light coloured gravel, river pebbles and stones from a garden centre, and placed some (washed) gravel and some of the river pebbles to cover the base of the bowl. I also bought some pond plants from โLincolnshire Pond Plants Ltdโ (the โPotted Native Packโ also from Amazon.) These plants were perfect for this size pond. Since then, I have purchased another couple of plants to add in. I bought some plastic pond plant baskets and just hooked these over the edge of the bowl with some metal S shaped kitchen utensil hooks. I placed the pots that needed some elevation in the water into these. Some plants just sit on the pond base or on a flat rock. I also purchased a wooden, expanding trellis that I placed around the bowl then just tied it up together at the back. The trellis just helped me to create an edge and surround that helped me to stack large rocks onto, and the remaining river stones and pebbles around the bowl to create a simple rockery effect. Around the top edge I just glued some of the pebbles with โUnibondโ (waterproof glue,) to hide the black plastic edging. I filled the bowl with water with my garden hose but made sure to fill it after placing the gravel etc and plants in. I also added a small, solar charged water fountain (purchased from Amazon.) This is great to keep some movement in the water, and to avoid stagnation. I also bought some small solar lights to add around the pond and amongst the plants. My pond backs onto my garden fence and either side of the pond Iโve added various potted plants. These are all in different sized ceramic pots and placed at staggered levels. To create height for some, I just turned some large plant pots upside down and added the potted plant pot on top. On the left side, I created a potted herb garden which has been fabulous for me to pick fresh herbs for my cooking. On the right side I added various rockery plants, some bee attracting plants, and others such as scented lavender for wonderful smells. I purchased these from a garden centre along with the rocks and pebbles. The pond plants established well quickly, and after a few weeks I also added some fish into the pond. โMedakaโ or more commonly known as โJapanese Rice fishโ. Theyโre small, but hardy and easy to care for fish, and perfect for a small water feature and I love watching them swim around happily. I added appropriate chemicals to the pond water to allow me to add the fish accordingly, eg. Safe water etc. similar to an aquarium set up. (The fish were something I wanted to add in as Iโve always had an aquarium at home, but donโt have one at the moment.) During the cold winter months I may bring the fish inside, or add a heater to the water. This was a project that I started really simply, and potentially can be set up by anyone in a matter of hours depending on what you create with it. I have just added extra touches over the period of a few weeks. Itโs now been set up for almost 4 months and I have really enjoyed doing it. Anyone that comes to the house gives great comments and it has been lovely watching the bees buzzing around the flowers and listening to the water trickling whilst chilling outside on the patio through summer.
