A History of the Jews in America

I wondered why the Jews have faced an eternity of often heinous and deadly discrimination and managed to become the most successful ethno-religious group in the world. Now, I know the answers and a lot more. Amazingly, surrounded by discriminatory forces the Jews have not allowed this to thwart success. Truly an inspiration read.

I've been looking for a secular based book of Jewish history for a while and I randomly stumbled upon this gem. Firstly, I really like Sachar's writing style; for me the reading was like a history textbook on one side and a novel on the other, it grabs you to an extend where it's actually difficult to put it down sometimes. His approach is also great, this is a secular based book and one realized this almost from the start. It does not go into any religious interpretations of events, but shows the effect secular life had on the mainstream Jewish religion. I think that's great, if I want to read a religious or philosophical history of the Jews, there are lot of options, but this is the first real HISTORY book I've found.

It’s a big book. Huge. But very detailed and informative and written in a way that makes it enjoyable to read.

Howard Sachar hasn't missed a beat in his excellent book. He has captured the struggle of a persecuted people to adapt and find a home in one of the few places in world where they would find freedom and fulfillment. He tells all, the good and the bad. People who have made America the great place it is as will as those who were involved in the darker side of life.

I love this book. I bought countless copies of this book in the past. I bought it again in order to give it to my friend. Though it was an used book, it came in a decent shape and had no problem for being given as a gift. I am glad that I didn't have to spend much more money to buy a new one.

A History of the Jews in the Modern World provides a more comprehensive view of Jewish History post 14th century than other histories I've read in the past. My book club is studying Jewish History, focusing initially on the latter half of the 19th century and early 20th century, also looking at European Jewish immigration to the United States, and has agreed to study Sachar's book.
