Beautiful natural food coloring
As some others have done, I have grown butterfly peas in my own garden primarily to get this beautiful blue color for foods and drinks. They are lovely flowers, and I will continue to grow them just for their aesthetic appeal and for bees, however, I am done with trying to grow enough of them to make my own coloring powder. It takes so many flowers!!! This is a much better solution for me. I can enjoy my flowers and have the blue color without additional labor. This flower has been used in Asia for centuries to impart the striking blue color to foods like rice--to make them more interesting--but I don't think it was ever used primarily as a flavoring ingredient. It doesn't have to taste good because that is not its purpose. Even still, it does not taste unpleasant. The flavor of the powder by itself is somewhat "earthy" in the same way a beet or a mild mushroom is earthy. It is also very slightly sweet. I actually kind of like it. However, taste doesn't really enter into the equation since it takes such a small amount to actually color something that you wouldn't know it was there at all except for the color. (I noticed that many people use something like a full teaspoon of this--which is WAY TOO MUCH--and then complain that it does not dissolve properly. If used correctly, in tiny amounts of maybe 1/8 tsp. at the most, to color a quart of liquid, it essentially disappears except for color.)I would note that this is not only a blue color but can be used equally well to create violet or a very pretty pink color in foods and beverages. The important factor in getting the color you want is to adjust the pH of the liquid. (This is a bit like the way hydrangeas will be either pink or blue depending upon the acidity or alkalinity of the soil they are planted in.) I have extremely hard well water and a very tiny amount of this powder in a glass of water turns it a brilliant blue. As a test, I added the same amount to bottle of vodka and that turned bright pink. Interesting! At any rate, I suggest experimenting to decide what works before planning a special dish or drink. A pinch of citric acid or a few drops of vinegar or lemon juice may be enough to affect a change of color.Overall, I really like this product and appreciate that it is organic and has no adulterants. It is fun and pretty, inexpensive and will go a long way. What's not to like?

Great powder to color drinks etc.
I got this for coloring drinks for funsies. Butterfly pea flower is pretty cool, since it's a nice blue color when dissolved in water but turns pink/purple when you add an acid (like lemon juice)! So this powder can make some cool colorful drinks in addition to being used in coloring frosting and whatnot. The seal on the package was a little tough to open, I had to do it piece by piece but at least it didn't spill or anything in the package. I tried it out in some water- added a little less than 1/8 tsp for a glass of water. This was too much, as some of it clumped up and wouldn't dissolve. I removed the clumps and it was still very very blue. So for drink purposes you don't need much of this. I added some ice and some lemon juice on top and voila, instant color change. There isn't a whole lot of taste especially with the small amount used, so this is mostly for color. Then package contains a lot of powder, so value for money is excellent. Can't wait to try it out in other things too!

At best food Color!
Disappointing. Sadly I can't return it and get a refund. I was convinced due to the Ingredients being "organic butterfly pea flower powder" but sadly as soon as I opened the container it was a different story! A strong smell of cooked spinach and maybe even sweet peas bombards your nostrils and it was not pleasant. Do not recommend it.

Excellent Butterfly Pea Powder, Fun Coloring For Drinks!
Butterfly Pea Powder is a fun natural coloring. It is hard to find a natural blue, but this is IT! And, when you add lemon juice, you get a surprise color change! This is a fun trick to do at a child's party! This Holistic Depot Butterfly Pea Flower Powder is mostly tasteless, and it imparts a lovely blue color to liquids. This is much easier to use than tea bags, or growing your own flowers. A little goes along way, so this container will last a while. I absolutely LOVE this powder!

Majestically Blue!
I grew butterfly pea vines in my garden the last few years and had collected flowers from the vines and then dried them. I use them for coloring my food as a natural color. This is the real deal! I usually use like 80 dried flowers, boil them in water for a few minutes to get the blue color. In the clear bowl that you see here, I used about 1 tsp of this, and it's sooooo blue already. I think I used too much! This is ground up butterfly pea flowers, so it does not dissolve in water, like matcha, it's suspended in liquid or may sink to the bottom. I do strain it first when I use it for coloring my food.If you add acid to it, like lemon juice, it will turn red. When it's diluted, it's more like cyan. This is so much more convenient than having to grow the vines, collect the flowers, dried them, cook them, extract the color. This, you just open the can and use the powder! đIf you're drinking it, it doesn't have much taste at all, I add lemon juice and honey to it, and it turns red (or a very deep pink) when lemon is added.

Nature-Based Food Coloring and Tea
I've purchased butterfly pea flower tea bags before, but those are best if you need a liquid brew (like in tea or cocktails). I was hoping this powder would be useful for tinting frosting and baked goods, and it is.Upon opening the jar, I was disappointed to see it only half-full; I think this is packaged by weight and not volume. However, I did quickly learn that the 1/2 teaspoon serving size is a good dose when you just need this for the color, and so a half-filled jar will go far. 1/2 to 1 teaspoon can color a few cups of cake frosting from light purple to deeper indigo. 1/2 teaspoon in hot water makes a very dark cup of indigo "tea." as well. Used in small doses, this doesn't have a noticeable flavor, although the quantity in the jar has a slightly musty, earthy smell. I don't think I'd drink this as tea on its own--it is not very flavorful and it would definitely stain your lips and mouth, in concentration (I touched the powder with my fingers and they stayed blue for hours).
