Good potential storyline, poor execution
Following on from McNeill's 'A Thousand Sons' was always going to be a challenge. Unfortunately, 'Nemesis' simply isn't up to it, and falls rather flat on its face. 'Nemesis' is the first book of the series that I have not been able to finish, and that which I have read (around 300 pages) was something of a chore. This book had the potential to be absolutely brilliant, focusing on a more underhand and refined form of warfare. Certainly, there were parts of this novel that I enjoyed, especially the glimpse into a planet-side law enforcement agency. However, the vast majority of it, seemed to me, as if it had been written by an over excited author who kept getting bored of what they were writing at the time and wanted to move on to new plots and story lines. As such, this book jumps around more than a five year old on a trampoline. It is nigh on impossible to follow it with any form of continuity - such a shame. This book had so much potential, but it was so poorly executed that it's almost totally unreadable.

James Swallow at his best
One of the best of the series. The whole concept of conducting a dirty war is well thought out with everyone being a varied shade of grey. There are no "good guys" in this book. Also the way the book changes tone from a story about 2 different assassination forces to a back world detective story is very clever as well.I agree with other reviews that this reads like a standalone novel but I don't see that as such a bad thing.James Swallow simply excels in this novel.

Brilliant book!
I'm currently getting through all of the Horus Heresy series, My review isn't based on any real knowledge of what makes a good book but I've enjoyed every book in the series so far and will most likely enjoy them all. It's nice to see different perspectives throughout the war and not just follow the Astartes. HIGHLY RECOMMEND!

Enjoyed it, you know that the Execution Force are ...
Enjoyed it, you know that the Execution Force are not going to succeed in their mission to kill Horus but the how and why make for an interesting read and insight into the secret war fought behind-the-scenes of the Horus Heresy.

The humanish side of the war
Sometimes it is nice to take a break from Astartes bloodbaths and consider the universe from others point of view. I particularly like the feeling of impending doom on a world turning to chaos, well written.

Brilliant
Brilliant story told from the viewpoint of mortal, albeit enhanced, assassins. On a par with Legion. One of the best the series so far.
