Magnum Opus

Album that lives up to its name
While its no secret that Yngwie Malmsteen is an amazingly nimble guitarist, his albums, especially the latter day releases have been rather hit and miss. Magnum Opus is definitely one of the classics. It has several fantastic songs including Vengeance, Voodoo, Time Will Tell, I'd Die Without You. Two of the instrumental numbers on this album, Amberdawn and the bonus track Cantabile, are among the best he has ever played. Fans of Malmsteen and people that appreciate good guitar-oriented songs should definitely look at picking this up.

People say that the blues experts can say more with one note than Yngwie can say with one hundred. The opposite is true - he can let rip a howler through the Marshall whilst they ping some s*** pentatonic run that sends us to sleep.

You mus have it
If you like Heavy Metal and guitars you need to have this album (or any album from Yngwie Malmsteen). This is the third album of his career so you need to listen to it. The first's are always the best.

Good vocals, fantastic guitar.
This is the album Yngwie apparently least likes, possibly because the final track is named after his ex-wife!In fact overall the songwriting quality is pretty good, as opposed to more recent releases. In particular I like Vengance, with its arpeggiated lead theme (still trying to play it myself), the commercial feel of "Only One" and "Cross the Line" - especially the bluesy solo in the latter one - and Voodoo, which is just a bit different in structure and chordal arrangement to make it interesting. And of course Yngwie's playing is out of this world. He is still using a fair amount of wah on this CD, a feature introduced on "Odyssey", although now a rarity again. Most Yngwie fans will like this CD, and if you've never heard him but like AOR and heavy metal, you may be pleasantly surprised. This CD also includes a bonus track, which I have to say isn't anything special, but that's a minor point. Still a good CD.
