I Love You Phillip Morris [DVD]

Worth the wait
I'd like to point out firstly that this is being reviewed from the US, where most folks don't know this movie exists. Currently, it's "scheduled" for a theatrical release this December. This is quite literally the most recent of at least 6 delays. I know... I've had to remark my calendar that many times over the past year. Of course, I've been waiting longer than that.I'm a certified Jim Carrey fanatic. I knew about this film when he first signed on several years ago. I eagerly awaited its release after the Jan. 2009 showing at film festivals, where it received fantastic reviews. And then... I waited and waited, but it never came. Something about a distributor disagreement.Perhaps the US can't find a way to market a film revolving around an openly gay male couple. 'Brokeback Mountain' was somewhat palatable to homophobes in that the protagonists were in the closet, hardly acknowledging it to themselves. And while it made for a good story, it isn't the only story to tell. In fact, homosexuality isn't even the main point of this plot. It's just the situation we find surrounding it. And the catalyst for several jokes... but I digress. When I realized the film had been out in the UK so long that it was now available on DVD (!!), I jumped on Amazon.co.uk and grabbed it. Different region? No problem - I've got techie friends who helped me with that. I now have a dvd player exclusively for one movie! So, after all of my expectations, after years of waiting rather impatiently, what do I make of the film? ... LOVED IT.Definitely, this was worth the wait (and the bragging rights). From start to finish, this was a laugh riot of the variety only Jim Carrey could produce. But it's not just him - the entire cast (especially Ewan) lights up the screen, and the pacing, camera work and plot are exemplary. It's the attention to detail that makes this film at once hilarious and quite heartwarming. Identifying with a gay conman is not something I thought I'd experience in my life, but hats off to the cast & crew - you really made it happen!I should point out that, although the gay thing is integral to a good 70% of the jokes, they never put down homosexuality. Unlike most other comedies I've seen, the main characters' sexual orientation is treated with respect and reality. They don't dehumanize the jokes, or make some type of moral comment. Neither do they lift up or separate the characters like some films can, as though frightened into a form of PC submission. They don't edit it, reorient it, satirize it, or placate it. The writers simply let these guys be gay, and followed the real possibilities therein, whether that led to a comedy of errors or a true love story, with all the attendant drama. Halfway through, you've forgotten they're gay, because it's secondary to the real plot - Steven Russell's ridiculous attempts to free himself from captivity, and Phillip Morris's growing unease and mistrust, with that undercurrent of bold affection and desire that goes for the gut just as much as the laughter.Bottom line: Jim Carrey never ceases to amaze me, but this went above and beyond my expectations. Fantastic effort all around! I'm pleased with my purchase. And yes... Should this ever finally appear in US theaters, I will buy a ticket!

Arguably one of the finest films of the past few years!
Okay i will admit it....i am an AVID Jim Carrey fan!!! and throughout his career he has some huge smashes, major recognition as a comedy icon and of course several hits and slumps along the way too! but out of all of his films The Truman Show i will ALWAYS consider to be his masterpiece role he has starred in!That was until i was utterly captivated by I Love You Phillip Morris. Which is a true story....it really is (apparently!). I got this film a few weeks ago and must say i have seen it several times since! it really is THAT great. You really can see Carrey inhibit his usual comical stance on his role, but brings this entirely fresh energy to his character (based on a real life conman) and also brings a lot of drama (as seen in as said Truman Show and The Pursuit Of Happiness) And that is how this film really works (with that absolute loveable quality that is so reminiscent of Tom Hanks' Forrest Gump!)The other surprise of the film is that of Ewan McGregor who plays Phillip Morris himself in the film. And plays the opposite of Carrey's character of Steven Russel. It's that fresh warmth that his character brings to the film and very passive outlook on life itself. In all honesty i am gutted this film hasn't recieved more acclaim and attention! as i genuinely feel this is not only one of the finest comedies of the past few years! but also up there with the finest films and i genuinely mean that! There's moments that'll shock you, have you on the floor! laughing to tears, and scenes that will hit you hard and pluck your heartstrings.I cannot state my love for this film enough! Just a must watch for those with an open mind and genuine love for movies!5/5 GOLD!

Hmmmmm, A Mysterious Unmarketed Effort
American film exhibitors were still handle far too delicately, fearing that Jim Carrey's large audience of teen boys would be turned off viewing their hero as a sissy struttin', bold snap queen semi-bisexual miss thing. Carrey initially seems uncomfortable in the opening scenes, but, by the time the love affair between Ewan and him kicks in, he becomes more and more committed to the role and therefore more convincing.Like a lot of his work, the premise is really far-fetched. But the more sensitive portrayal by Ewan MacGregor gives the movie integrity.Thankfully, the LOGO channel has given the movie a lot higher bipartisan exposure though the channels targeted reach fails to introduce his core audience, when they should really see it.
