Saul Leiter: Early Color Hardcover – Illustrated, January 15, 2006

First I would like to thank Book Depository US for shipping me the book. It arrived in heavy corrugated packaging and the book was sealed. It arrived in perfect condition without any damages or flaws. Note that it will take a little longer to arrive if you request free shipping as it ships via USPS.As for the book; my eyes welted and watered as I looked at the images. These are neither photographs nor pictures but rather scenes from my childhood and younger days. The quality of the pages depicts perfect color balances where the yellows and oranges are warm but not overly saturated. The hues are perfectly balanced and the luminance in each color is so perfect that each image looks like a perfect memory of mine. Though the book is small (that’s how Leiter wanted it so he could keep it on his night stand), it is loaded with images. This turned out to be a book that I shall cherish forever and pass down to my family.

Saul Leiter kept taking photographs for many years. But in a silent and lonely way. Very few exhibitions. Perhaps he was unaware of how good he was (still is and will be). We cannot find him in The History of Photography of Beaumont Newhall and others most important photography history books. But we cant blame either Newhall or other historians. We can only blame Leiter. And we should bless whoever brought him to light. From this book on, Leiter will be in every photography history book. Find out for yourself. Sublime, extremely delicate, outstanding colors difficult to explain, a very particular sense of geometry and composition; he has an own and wordless personality. I go over it every now and them, and every time I find something new I overlooked before. They are all classic pictures. Yoou will never get bored staring at them once and again, endlessly!

This book is stunning. Firstly, the photographs speak to the pure artistry of Saul's photographic vision which is magnificent. Secondly the print company, Steidl, did an outstanding printing of this beautiful book. The square format added a nice dimensional backdrop to the photographs and size lent so well to bringing the viewer more closely into the page and photograph. And the paper used for the book was, or atleast I think so, a perfect selection for the feel of quality was apparent and the printed photograph was done justly in honor of the photographs. Wonderful, wonderful book.

This is a classic selection of Saul Leiter's color work. Absolutely wonderful, gorgeous photos. The quality of reproduction and layout is excellent. I am very happy with this book. I was not so happy with the seller "SuperBookDeals" that leads you to believe that the book is in stock, has "shipped" but in reality doesn't get actually shipped until about 3 weeks later. SuperBookDeals is very misleading as you can see if you review its feedback.

Don't get me wrong: this little book of photographs --and it is little (8" x 8" square)-- is quite lovely. Personally I would like for it to be larger in format...and yet Saul Leiter's work is in itself quiet and understated, and therefore the book's small size seems to reflect something important about the artist and his aesthetic.HOWEVER, if you are at all concerned about such things, or a serious collector of photography books, you should know that amazon.com is NOT currently selling 2008/First Editions (as described in both the "Book Description" and "Product Details" areas above). The 2008 First Edition of this Steidl book sold out long ago, and what is currently shipping is the 2013/Fourth Printing edition of the book. I tried to bring this to the attention of Amazon.com staff via their customer service channels, but they seem incapable of understanding the crucial difference between a "First Edition" and a "Fourth Printing," and have therefore neglected to change the product information here on the site. Consider yourself warned!

Had no expectations when ordering this book - but am very pleased I did. This is theideal small reference book with photos that are challenging in the sense that theyclearly 'make their own rules' for that time- creative and visually appealing, Colours are well reproduced and imagine it is a bookyou would return to often.

His pictures are a constant inspiration. His work in color was brilliant. This book makes me look at photography as the art it truly is.

Everything about this book is just perfect - size, shape, paper texture, binding, printing and even aroma. And of course, Leiter's photography, of which this is a perfect collection.

Wonderful collection of a very under known and brilliant photographer. A Perfect match and compliment to Saul Leiter’s two volume set “Early Black and White: interiors & exteriors. Printed to a very high quality. One of the best I have seen!

Lovely book. Wonderful images. I have another Leiter book where some of the same images are printed with more intense colour - both are fine, but somehow this collection of images feel more ‘authentic’. It’s a small book, but full of great images. A must-have for this artist. Also by Steidl, In My Room is a companion volume, black and white images of women, naked and semi-naked, all shot indoors - very good also.
