This book is mainly about John Miller's life as a sailor and Captain sailing around the world in the 1820s to the 1850s.His first-hand reports relating the tough living conditions and brutal discipline on board ship are revealing.The corruptness of business at that time, and the meaness of Government(when John becomes a coastguard), illustrate how hard it was for a hard-working honest man to survive.John Miller's son Oswald married into my family, so I was interested in his family life, but there is very little on that subject in the book.
