Alera ALELF3654LG Four-Drawer Lateral File Cabinet, 36w x 19-1/4d x 53-1/4h, Light Gray

I spent quite a bit of time (likely TOO long) trying to find a decent, quality, 2-drawer lateral file cabinet, including looking at a TON of reviews. After this lengthy quest, I finally went ahead and ordered this Alera cabinet. I ordered on the 19th and it appeared the morning of the 21st - talk about FAST shipping - wow!As some have noted, it arrives via truck and while the corners/edges comes with protective packaging, there is a part of the sides and ends that are simply sealed in wrap. There is then a top and bottom cardboard case. It took little to no time to get it all unwrapped. I'm happy to report that my cabinet had no scratches, dings, dents, doinks, or any other malformity. Best part was, it DOES come fully assembled, so aside from hauling it from my garage into my home office, there were no issues there. I did end up getting some rods to be able to hang my folders front-to-back (Alera ALELF3036 Two Row Hangrails for 30" or 36" Files, Aluminum (Pack of 4)).Overall, this entire experience was excellent. I'm very pleased with this cabinet. It is already being put to good use. Would definitely recommend this cabinet!

I have used large upright files for years, but this was a lateral file for a study. This is an excellent file, and the company response when the first file was damaged was excellent. I think it is important to know that the full weight is the file, and to have a plan to move it, if you are in a residential setting Also, directions for removing the drawers are not included in materials with the file. Doing the drawer removal isn't simply a matter of lifting them and tilting them out, and removal makes it possible for two ordinary people to move it.The drawer control engineering seems a weak point. We had minor problem with the mechanism that controls drawer opening (designed to prevent both drawers from being opened at the same time.) This function seems to be controlled by a plastic insert at the left bottom drawer slide. Without too much detail, that insert was broken with a small piece cracked off. Putting it back together with glue didn't hold, and we ended up removing a small metal tab on the mechanism to inactivate this feature.The company was great to deal with -- the initial file had shipping damage, and we got immediate response, replacement and return, with excellent contact via email. I would definitely order from the company again. I would order the file, if I had ready help to move something of this weight.

I'd say 3.5 stars if I could give partial. It's not packed super well, in my opinion. The top and corners are protected, but the front and back are just shrink wrapped. Consequently, mine came with a couple of minor scratches but no dents. The paint scratches quite easily! I made several white marks on it just from transferring files from the old cabinet. These are just aesthetic things.Functionally, it's 4 stars in my book. It's a 190 pounds, so not super heavy. That's just enough to be sturdy while making it movable. I'd go with a heavier and more solid cabinet if I knew I'd keep in place for a long time. It comes with adjustable rails for legal and letter size along with other size options. The rails are robust and work well. The only item on function I don't like is the gap at the top of each drawer. It's too wide such that it would be very easy to get a screwdriver or other tool to pry it open. It's simply not as secure as I'd like or as tight as other file cabinets I've owned.Still, it's a solid option for a budget level cabinet. Just have the proper expectations for what you are getting. It works for my needs, but I would get a tougher option if I knew it would stay in place for several years.

I am totally pleased with this 2-drawer black lateral file cabinet. After two decades of a very inexpensive wood-type front-to-back file cabinet, finally decided to upgrade. It is solid, very well made and blends in very well with my home office. The drawers work great and one cannot open both drawers at the same time which is a great safety feature. It also comes with keys to lock it if needed. It is made to be on a slope with an adjustment of front screws, but don't do any adjusting until you see how it works beforehand. I asked my husband to adjust screws as the instructions seemed to call for, and now it's a tad too much, so he has to undo his adjustment as the drawer wants to close when you don't want it to, but that's our mistake and easily fixed. It comes with the hanging file rails! There seems to be some confusion on this from what I've read, but it comes complete. It seems to me that this is heavy enough and solid enough for any type of use, unless one plans to file bricks.Have to note it was shipped very quickly, just as shipper said it would be. It arrived on a wood pallet, super well wrapped & boxed. It turned out there were a couple of scratches on the front, hardly noticeable, but when I contacted the seller and sent the pictures as requested, they immediately took care of it. So, I am totally happy with my new file cabinet, it works great and wasn't out of my price range.

These were delivered on the 1st day of the delivery-estimate date, and were packaged well to prevent damage. And they did arrive undamaged. They are good file cabinets. Having used many file cabinets in my career as an accountant type I would say I have seen sturdier file cabinets. But these are still plenty sturdy enough and you do have to consider the price. I bought 2 of these file cabinets - one for each side of my desk in my home office (I work from home) and I think they are going to be just fine. They come with drawer labels that are magnetized - not like the ones shown in the instructions. The magnetized labels seem like they would get knocked around easily so don't seem practical. But overall I am happy with the purchase. BTW, the "hanging folder frames" come inside each drawer secured in place by these little black plastic things. I couldn't get the things off! I was trying to peal them off kind of like you would remove a lid from something. I finally realized that if you push the little piece plastic from the other side, the inside, they easily come off. I would recommend these if you aren't looking for high-end file cabinets.
