High-quality ginseng roots (Panax quinquefolius) often sell for up to $350 per pound, making it one of the more valuable plants in the world. Panax ginseng grows hardy tot Climate Zones 1 through 9, and 16 through 22 depending on your microclimate. It prefers a temperate climate with mild summers and grows best when temperatures are from 65 to 70 degrees Fahrenheit. Panax ginseng, while not particularly ornamental, makes an interesting novelty plant to grow in your herb or woodland garden. Make a solution of 4 parts water and 1 part bleach. Soak Panax ginseng seeds in the solution for 10 minutes. Discard floating seeds; they are not viable and will not germinate. Rinse seeds with water after soaking. 2 Pour 3 tablespoons of powdered fungicide into a plastic bag. Put the ginseng seeds in the bag. Shake the bag to coat them with the fungicide. 3 Select a site for the ginseng seeds. Panax ginseng prefers to grow in shady woodlands. Ginseng grows in loamy, clay or sandy soil with a pH between 5.5 and 6.0. If growing ginseng in the woods, look for walnut trees, poplar trees, cohosh, ferns and Solomon's seal. These plants indicate a favorable environment for ginseng. Avoid areas where oak trees grow. 4 Plant the Panax ginseng seeds in the fall. Plant seeds 1/4 to 1/2 inch deep and 4 to 6 inches apart. Make rows 8 to 10 inches apart. 5 Cover the ginseng seeds with 1 inch of rotted leaves to keep the ground from drying out. Do not use oak leaves. 6 Keep the soil moist, but not soaking wet, until the ginseng seeds germinate. The seeds will not germinate if the soil dries out. Germination takes up to 18 months. 7 Provide water as needed to keep the soil and the ginseng plants moist.
