Worthy successor to the venerable Chromonica 270/48
I really like this harmonica. It feels really well put together, responsive and has some of the character of the older Chromonica. The mouthpiece and comb are plastic, rather than the metal and pearwood of the Chromonica. This is a plus for me as I am a bit of a wet player and this has caused wooden combs to crack in the past. Also the mouthpiece channels are squarish rather than round as in the CX12 or Deluxe Chromonica, which I find gives my playing a rather pleasant raspiness. I don't know if I'd go for this over the CX12; it's not as loud or quite as comfortable but it is a bit cheaper, and it offers some of the old Chromonica feel in a more modern package. I also prefer the soft rigid case over the bulky ABS boxes that many other models come in. I also like the fact that the button action is shorter than some other models, although it has a tendency to stick in between sessions.

Ready to move on to a Chromatic?
Don't think that a Chromatic is too hard to play, or that you won't be able to understand the tuning. This Hohner can really help. At the worst, you will have a harp in C and a harp in C#, which is pretty cool in itself. Both sets of reeds are excellent and the tone is outstanding. If all you ever do is hold the slider for one song and then release it for the second, you'll get your money's worth. But when you start moving the slider to play in minor key signatures, or vibrate between two notes or chords; that is where the fun starts. The Discovery is aimed at entry-level players. However, it is a very good quality entry instrument, and should not be overlooked for the sake of the £40 to £60 chromatics out there. You'll get more joy from something that works well. The pouch-type case is very easy to use and sturdy.

Air loss makes this instrument difficult to play.
I bought this on the strength of the many positive reviews. What I did not know beforehand, is that many chromatic harmonicas can be prone to air loss problems. The one I received is so bad that when you try to play a note, the first thing you hear is a hiss. You then have to make an extra effort to get the note out.I am surprised it got past quality control. In fact, it may even be a returned product, because when it arrived it was not inside a sealed Hohner box.I am very disappointed, but I have learned a lot. (expensive lesson!)

An Excellent Hohner
It has a sweet tone and is easy to play. The construction is an excellent example of German engineering. With notes running from C4 to C7, the high notes are positively ethereal, but pure and clean. You could pay 4 times the price for a MeisterKlasse, but I think the Discovery sounds just as sweet.

Quite a nice instrument
As a bass player, i was looking for a more portable instrument. It has a nice warm tone and the slider works well. Comes in a handy little soft case with a belt loop. The only criticism I have is that the top octave is a hard to blow and draw on, thought I may have to change my embouchure.
