Looney Tunes Collector's Choice, Volume 2

Classic, funny cartoons
Ever since the age of 4, or thereabouts, I've loved Looney Tunes cartoons. These are not the violent, gun-culture-centric, shoot-em-all-dead type of cartoon that passes as being suitable for children these days. No, these are the crazy, laugh-until-you-cry kind of the 1950s and 60s, when children were entertained, rather than brainwashed. I love this stuff. The only thing lacking, in fact, is a dose of Road Runner.

Marvellous
Bags of Nostalgia, great colour, tuneful music and personal fond memories of cinema going; whether or not a young audience nowadays will enjoy the cartoons I am unable to comment but if you are over 60 years of age you will probably enjoy of few minutes at a time of this DVD .... not forgetting that: "That's all Folk's!" is now part of the English language. Marvellous!

Well restored, pity about the menu.
Restored cartoons with some interesting extra material. The menus are as with the first DVD a bit cumbersome.Nice to have these wonderful old cartoons on DVD, I remember many of them from my childhood. They are really well restored also - the DVDs I have of unrestored cartoons of a similar vintage look awful in comparison.Recommended.

Remembering childhood days
These are the cartoons I grew up with ,having told my two children[ who are 8 and 6years old ]so much about them they really wanted to see them ,and they absolutely loved them .For me it was a great pleasure sharing part of my childhood with my own children and seeing how much they enjoyed it .

Digging Deeper in the Looney Vault
WB is finally realizing that there is a demand for their classic Looney Tunes shorts and have delivered more shorts that haven’t been seen on video since the analog era. There is still representation of all the star characters, but mixed in with more one shots.Tex Avery finally gets some representation with four of his Schlesinger era shorts. Cross Country Detours (the selling point for me) and Hamateur Night are among his best. I Wanna Be A Sailor and The Penguin Parade are lower key, but still a delight to see fully restored. This collection rounds out Frank Tashlin’s 1940’s filmography with Brother Brat and Behind The Meatball; the latter which for some reason was never shown much on Cartoon Network or Boomerang. This leaves The Major Lied Till Dawn as the remaining Tashlin short which hasn’t been shown restored.Other must haves include A Hick, A Slick, And A Chick, a bizzare yet hilarious Art Davis entry. One Meat Brawl, a quintessential Porky short from McKimson, which was also seldomly released on video for some reason. Ghost Wanted, an early cutesy, but atmospheric entry from Chuck Jones, which casts Tex Avery as a jovial ghost. The restorations boast a ridiculous amount of clarity. While the soundtracks are mostly taken from the same Turner masters from the 90s (which sound worn out), Cross Country Detours sounds crisper. I speculate they utilized the entire soundtrack from the nitrate print with original credits on this transfer. One exception is The Wacky Worm. It looks like the Turner master from the mid-90s was used as a source material. The colors look awful. I presume the negatives either don’t exist anymore or were were not useable. Although most reviewers aren’t complaining so much, because that short doesn’t appear to have many fans.Official word is that volume three is in the works. I really hope Tex Avery gets a bigger dose on upcoming volumes. He was underrepresented in the Golden Collections compared to the other directors. I’d like to see entries like A Feud There Was, Believe It Or Else, and Aloha Hooey. Hopefully Detouring America and Johnny Smith and Poker-Huntas aren’t on the verboten list. Either way, the more pre-1948 entries, the better. So far, this new series of classic Looney Tunes has been very promising. Here’s hoping that Warner Archive can put out as many essentials and obscurities as possible.

Toll!
