Q: can this be used to check to see if a cable is balanced or unbalanced?

Most microphone (XLR) cables are balanced and you can test for that with this cable tester. When you plug both ends of a properly wired, balanced mic cable into the tester, you should see three pairs of lights come on as you move the knob from position 1 to 2 and to 3. Unfortunately, it is not that easy for 1/4" instrument cables. Some have two conductors (tip & sleeve) and some have three (ring, tip, & sleeve). The three conductor 1/4" cables are usually balanced, but with this tester it is not easy to verify that because it uses the same jacks for testing all 1/4" cables. The best way to tell how a ring, tip, sleeve 1/4" cable is wired is to simply unscrew the strain relief on each end and look at the wiring. If you're not sure what to look for, you can search for a YouTube video that explains it.
