Silhouette is the new album from Ali Campbell, the legendary voice of UB40 reunited with Astro & Mickey. Recorded in London's renowned RAK Studios, the album is an inspired mix of freshly-minted new songs and sparkling, reggaefied cover versions of classics by The Beatles, Bob Dylan, The Chi-Lites and others. The track Silhouette was originally a 1957 hit for the American doo-wop group The Rays, though this new, yearning take, owes more to an early 1970s version by the crown prince of reggae, the late Dennis Brown. As founding members of UB40, Ali, Mickey and Astro helped to define reggae music for a generation. The iconic Birmingham reggae troupe topped the UK singles chart on three occasions and sold 70 million records as they took their smooth yet rootsy musical blend to all corners of the globe. Campbell left the band in 2008 after 29 years and has since released four reggae-themed solo collections, with Mickey, who left UB40 soon after Ali, joining him on keys. Astro remained with the band until November 2013, when he left to team up again with Ali and Mickey. With the redoubtable Astro lending strong vocal support and Mickey's keyboards to the fore in a new band that includes a three-piece horn section, their lithe but potent sound should delight fans old and new.

Feed your fans what they want, no country, no rock, no roll…… JUST REGGAE !
It's good.UB40 are the soundtrack to many lives including mine, most followers probably just want them to be as they were and carry on, but if this is not to be then we'll carry on listening anyway.Ali's voice is still good and Astro adds to a return of the overall UB40 feeling, good choice of songs, a nice mix and well produced.Keep up the good work and remember to feed your fans what they want, no country, no rock, no roll…… JUST REGGAE !**UPDATE 1 YEAR LATER**This really is a classic album now, still playing one year later and sounds better now with familiarity. Best up loud with big speakers, try it. On a par with Guns in the Ghetto & Signing Off.

Proper UB40
This album is as close to what you'd expect to get with a 2014 album by the old UB40. It's a good mix of 6 covers and 7 originals with Ali C showing he remains a great songwriter. The black vinyl is 2 discs of 180g and nicely packaged including full lyrics. You know what you'll get so buy it and enjoy.

Just love this, can't stop playing it.
Absolutely love it, have a few favourites on there. Love Track 2 Silhouette, Track 3 Cyber Bully Boys, listen to the lyrics, so very true about this type of person. Love Tracks 12 and 13, Track 6, Remember them, brilliant especially for this year as we remember our 1st World War heroes and all our military fighting our cause. Just a brilliant album and I cannot wait to see Ali, Micky and Astro in April live, I am sure they will be brilliant. All in all, brilliant.

great UB40....
I've waited a long time before buying this album. I thought it wasn't a good one... But what a surprise... Nice, good, strong reggae, marvellous UB40, as we used to hear a long time ago. I consider that it's one of the best they ever released. So, if you like UB40, you must have this record that I listen over and over and over......

Best UB40/Ali album since Labour of Love 2
All 13 songs are great. Great vocal contributions from Astro on a few tracks, which was missing from Ali's solo albums. Yes technically this is NOT a UB40 album, but it is much better than anything that the official band have put out. This is up there with UB40's best albums and I think is only bettered by a few, maybe Signing Off, Labour of Love 2. Title track and Cyber Bully Boys are my two favourite tracks, but there is nothing here that I would skip over. I've had the cd since it came out, vinyl pressin sounds amazing. I was happy that Astro and Mickey reunited with Ali, but was not expecting such great results when this came out. Only thing better would be a full band reunion, but I doubt that is in the cards.

Helaas... zonder reactie. Ronduit slecht dus.

A New UB40 CD By Any Other Name
If you loved the original UB40 before Ali Campbell left the band in 2008, you will love this new CD, which is for all intents and purposes, an Ali Campbell solo album, but it is also the closest thing you can buy these days to a UB40 CD that sounds like the original band. You can chalk that up to the fact that Mickey Virtue is on keyboards and Astro (Terrence Wilson) is on vocals from the original UB40 line-up, and both complement Ali (who now uses the moniker, "The Legendary Voice of UB40") to once again make that sound which brings me back to the good ol' days of UB40 reggae when they were in their prime. This CD is a very good representation of where Ali Campbell is in 2014 and the sound is unmistakeably UB40. Astro's inclusion in the mix makes for a very smooth sounding album, especially the songs where the synergy is still there between Ali and Astro (most notably on Silhouette, Fijian Sunset, and History). A number of interesting cover songs (The Beatles 'Anytime At All' and the Bob Dylan hit 'I Want You' to name a few) fit the motif of the CD very nicely but they don't distract from the original material one bit. My personal favorite on the album is the Ali-penned 'Cyber Bully Boys' which (IMHO) would have been the first single I would have released from the record (although Silhouette got that honor). As is par for the course on any Ali Campbell CD (or UB40 for that matter), there are a few tongue-in-cheek type songs that seem a little out of place at times (I'm Missing You, Yes I'm Ready) but overall, this is a very tight and cohesive offering that drips that UB40 reggae from days gone by, even though the political angst doesn't surface much anymore lyrically like it did in the early days of the band. My only complaint is the use of the 'clap track' a little too much across the span of the CD, but the musicianship is top notch (drums, horns, guitars, and keys all sound crisp with solid chops all around). So if you want to smile and sway like you used to when you hear UB40, this is just what the doctor ordered.Bottom line: If you were a fan of UB40 during their heyday, you will love this CD, so buy it, you won't be disappointed. Like the CD jacket says (which is still 100% true), "REAL UK REGGAE SINCE 1979". That about says it all. Hopefully Ali and the boys will come Stateside so we can hear these songs stretch out live, which I have a feeling will enhance and open them up for improvisation even more out on the road.Enjoy!
