I enjoyed the dvd "The Scarlet & the Black" & wanted to read the book that it was based on. I thoroughly enjoyed the book (the dvd followed it very closely). He was a very brave man & helped by men & women of many nationalities & religions he saved thousands of POWs & Jews.. He was aptly named "The Scarlet Pimpernel of The Vatican" I can recommend this book to all who like a good thriller

Scarlet and black
I bought this as I had seen the film several times with Gregory Peck. as Monsignor Hugh O'Flaherty. I thought he resembled the true Monsignor. This book was so good I could barely put it down. A true story which also contained photographs and diagrams.Well worth reading.

Truly Inspiring
As I already had the DVD which was very well made, I was glad to see the book, especially as, given the time-limit, films can never really do more than portray the highlights of stories. It was truly inspiring reading of all that Monsignor Flaherty did so much to save the Jews from persecution.

True courage and divine help.
A gripping record of how an Irish priest and brave Italians outwitted the German army occupying Rome in WW2.
