Easy to get caught up in
This book is easy to get caught up in. The grievance committee deal with complaints against the legal profession and this is the story about a philandering lawyer who eventually received judgment. This is a really detailed book which helps to picture what's going on. This is the kind of story that would translate very well onto the screen. I enjoyed reading this book and I highly recommend it.

Legal pageturner shines the spotlight on sleazy lawyer
Just finished "The Grievance Committee". Couldn't put it down. It's set in San Antonio and focuses on the process used to investigate and discipline lawyers. The author's experience on grievance committees informs the book. I learned a lot about how the process works (and doesn't) in the book through the richly drawn characters and the narrative which follows three women through the steps in the process. Along the way, the author allows the characters to expose their flaws and humanity, including a judge who fudges his expense accounts and likes to pursue his lust when he travels from his small home town to San Antonio. Mostly, I liked the pace of the story and the believable characters who are no doubt based on the authors experiences and associates. I am looking for the follow-up book due later this year.

An insider makes the legal profession come to life
The Grievance Committee is a sober but entertaining behind-the-scenes view of the legal profession. It reflects the author's deep knowledge of not only his profession but also of the Catholic Church, his home town of San Antonio, and the sometimes flawed characters who populate both. I look forward to meeting the characters again in the forthcoming "Book Two" of the series. Readers who have suffered through a personal encounter with our court system will find the courtroom dialogue that pervades the book gripping but painfully authentic.

Compelling Book
This is an excellent book that is detailed and accurate with regard to what happens on a grievance committee. As an attorney member and Chairman for many years, it was very compelling. I think I liked it best because it didn't portray people who, by law, could not do what they'd like to do to help someone as villains, but victims almost themselves, of a system that was in many ways deeply flawed. It is hard for me to tell if someone not familiar with the system would like the book as much as I did, but I tend to think they may like it even better.

Four Stars
Accurate in its description of the grievance committee. I served on one for 6 years.

Realism in the legal process.
Being a retired attorney I related to it. Not wordy, just clear cut writing. Mr. Southers is to be commended onmaking an otherwise boring subject interesting.
