Game of Death

co-starring martial arts legends Dan Inosanto, Bob Wall and Sammo Hung
Recommended for Bruce Lee fans, and martial arts film junkies alike. The new performances from Danny Inosanto and Bob Wall are really good and worth the price of admission alone.Inosanto is Lee's successor in Jeet Kune Do, and has continued his teachings around the world. In the original footage, he has a classic nunchaku fight with Lee, around the 3rd level of the original pagoda. You'll get to see that alright, but you'll have to wait for it ...In this production, he's also in 2 really good fight scenes, as one of the Syndicate's thugs, and then in a restaurant fight scene where he shows some really good Jeet Kune Do! In the first scene, they find a creative way to insert Abdul-Jabbar as well.Bob Wall (Enter the Dragon, Way of/Return of the Dragon) is great in his usual role as the lead henchman, and kicks "Billy"'s butt around. His acting actually seems more polished compared to in those films. As a surprise bonus, there is an absolutely EPIC ring fight between Wall and Sammo Hung. They were absolutely going all-out, no holds barred for maximum realism. The script eventually gets around to using most, but not all, of the original Game of Death footage. One thing that starts to get annoying is the over-use at this point of the James Bond motif. It was cool at first, but ... very little of the original audio was used with most of original footage. I believe it was only used in the showdown with Inosanto (who likely insisted). What makes this film less than great is Billy Lo himself. The actors who played him (hard to find their names in the credits) show some pretty good Kung Fu, but it is certainly not Bruce Lee, or even Bruce Li, or Bruce Le, or Dragon Lee ... any of whom would have been better for the role. The Kung Fu was good enough, the problem is the film just has too many awkward moments where it is obviously trying to hide the fact that Billy is not Lee. Some were done quite well, but some not so well; at least one was very bad.The opening credits segue into the fight with Chuck Norris from Way of the Dragon, which will be quite entertaining to those who have not seen it. But to Lee fans, it is obviously just a way to fill the time, with very little relevance to the script. The new ending is satisfying and well executed. Lots of footage is used from Enter the Dragon in a very clever way that never looks bad. Totally worth watching.

Good quality presentation.
The audio and video are much better than the typical dubbed in Asian martial arts movie. I have all the official Bruce Lee movies and the quality on this is first class. It is in par with my collector's or anniversary edition of Enter the Dragon or Return of the Dragon.

Yes it stunk, but still should be in your collection.
This movie has to be one of the worst Bruce Lee movies I have ever seen, but I knew that had to be oblivious since he died before the movie was finished. I decided to get it because I thought it could stand on its own, but in reality it can't stand on its own because its billed as "Bruce Lee's Final Movie" and he only appears in about 20 minutes of it and only 12 minutes was from his original project "Game of Death". The original project was supposed to be about a group of seekers (led by Lee) that would raid some tower and seek out the greatest fighters of all time. Unfortunately, Lee decided to put the project on hold when he was contacted to do "Enter The Dragon" and then died before he could restart his "Game of Death" production. All was left was the ending that Lee shot. So to capture on the legend of the late Bruce Lee, it was decided to complete a version of "Game of Death" with a new storyline and some doubles. It was so oblivious when the fakes were on the screen and having close-ups of the real Bruce Lee from his other movies made it look even faker. I could have live with the fake Lee sound effects and voice because many of Lee's movies were dubbed into English anyways, but knowing it isn't Lee makes me want to either laugh at the people billing this as a "Bruce Lee film". The story is basically about Billy Lo (Bruce Lee and a few fakes), a actor, that fakes his death when some mobsters try to kill him for refusing to join them. Billy then spends most of the movie seeking revenge, and then confronts the mobster's henchmen and picks them off one by one. The "henchmen scenes" come from the original "Game of Death" concept with the real Bruce Lee. It should still find a place in your Bruce Lee or Marital Arts movie collection for a few reasons:1. Colleen Camp.2. The fight scene with Bob Wall and the fake Bruce Lee in the locker room.3. Using real footage from Bruce Lee's funeral as backdrop to "Billy Lo's" funeral. I think they even had a open casket shot of Bruce in the film. I think this is true because later when they show a scene with Hugh O'Brien destroying a clay head, the bangs were shorter than shown during the "funeral" footage, making me think they might have shown the real Bruce Lee's body in that quick shot. How tasteful of them.4. The lame attempts to mask the fakes as the "real" Bruce Lee. The infamous scene with Hugh O'Brien, where they attach a cardboard photo of Bruce on the fakes head is too much. The sunglasses and the fact that the doubles looked like they were either smaller than Lee didn't help matters either.5. The final showdown with the "karate masters". It was oblivious that some of these shots were trimmed or never finished, but they still show what Bruce Lee was all about. The fight with Kareem Abdul-Jabbar was funny in a Sports Entertainment (Wrestling) kind of way.6. Hugh O'Brien - karate master.7. The final fake that passes more like Bruce than the rest of the fakes. So I would get this film, but please don't expect much.

ERREUR
Attention, il ne s'agit pas de GAME OF DEATH (LE JEU DE LA MORT) avec Bruce Lee, Hugh O'Brian (Acteur), Gig Young (Acteur), Robert Clouse (Réalisateur) mais de GAME OF DEATH (2011) avec Wesley Snipes, Gary daniels ...

The Bruce Lee film that never was
The Bruce Lee film that never was a Bruce Lee film. The mismatched stock footage, the terrible stand-ins and other bizarre set ups used throughout this terrible mash of a movie have become almost legendary. Not too mention the bad acting from the main Lee stand - in and the awful fighting cries as dubbed by one Chris Kent. Then we have Colleen Camp (playing Bruce's love interest) doing the worst bit of playing hysterical in a film that is actually hysterical . Just watch that scene between her and Dean Jagger in the hospital garden and you'll know what I mean.Gig Young, a once well respected Hollywood actor - who sadly later became an alcoholic. Here he proves it by slurring his dialogue throughout his scenes in the film. Sadly, not long after finishing the film, Gig shot dead his girlfriend Kim Schmidt, he then turned the gun on himself. Kim also happened to be credited as a script writer for 'Game of Death' and the two had met while making the film. Much of the original fight footage Bruce Lee shot was never used in the 1978 version. I tend to think its because the Director Robert Clouse knew that Lee was a better action director than he was.Just take a look at the unedited version of the fight with Kareem Abdul Jabbar featured in the extras section. That P.O.V shot from the rocking chair is sheer genius. Here in the UK we only got two actual Bruce Lee fights featured in the film. The Lee/ Inosanto Nunchaku clash was cut by our censors on its release. Thankfully its all here in this Blu ray edition. And what of the Blu Ray? Well the quality for a Blu ray is actually pretty poor. There is no way this film has under gone any remastering or been up- scaled in any shape or form. Its the same standard as the Hong Legends release. For all its bad points I have given the film three stars only because this is the uncut version. Looking back, Golden Harvest should have left it alone and released the original footage as part of a documentary. That then would have been viewed as a genuine tribute to Bruce Lee rather than this distasteful mess.

Just......beautiful.....
This is the ultimate "Game of Death" DVD for all Bruce Lee fans. With over 3 hours of extras, you can't go wrong. There is even unseen footage of the original pagoda fight sequence the way Bruce would have wanted it. It's also a whole 40 minutes, fighting against Dan Inosanto, the Hapkido master (forgot his name) and Kareem Abdul Jabbar. The original storyline is so much better than Hollywood's 1978 edited version.Although "Game of Death" was the weakest Bruce Lee film overall, simply because Bruce was not in most of it, the two Bruce Lee look-alikes did a good job under the circumstances.

A great fan of Bruce Lee
I watched the movie when it was screened in the cinemas. Being a great fan of Bruce Lee, I wanted to own the DVD as part of the collection. I already have his other four movies in my collection as well as the complete TV series of The Green Hornet in which he stars as Kato. However, some the opening credits and introductory portions appeared to be outside of the TV screen. Looked like they did not fit into the TV screen size. I wonder why.
