A Lifetime Adventure
The Callaway family lived their faith, as few people do. They endured many difficulties, in order to share Christianity with the people of rural Thailand. This loving work proceeded in one direction only, however. Lois was not interested in the religious ideas that already existed in Thailand. It never occurred to her that the stories they told about spirits and the creation of the world might come from the same source as the Bible. One example:"Saeng Meng came to Lois on the Chinese New Year. It had rained all day and he looked concerned.'This has never happened before,' he said, 'I am very afraid that there will be a great flood.'Saeng Meng's concern over a great flood proved to be an excellent segue for Lois to talk again about God's faithfulness. After the story of Noah, she assured him that there would be no such flood ever again. He seemed unimpressed and preoccupied with the preparations of further festivities. His response was typical. Lois felt a deep frustration. The Life-giving words of Scripture were repeatedly dismissed as light entertainment and diversion from the mundane."The Thais had their own "flood" story, which Lois "dismissed."
