An Invested Life: Professor Wei-Cheng Lin

I applaud the Author for so courageously sharing the story of Dr. W.C. Lin’s life with us. This book has presented such a wonderful portrait of Dr. Lin, which not only describes his elaborate contributions in mining and metallurgical engineering as well as the electron spin resonance of Quantum Chemistry, but also tells the brilliant and jubilant story of his odyssey as a patriotic scholar, a distinguished researcher, and a well- admired professor with ambitions and dreams. Like many of the Seventh Sino-British Boxer Indemnity scholars (my father W.H. Chin was among them), Dr. Lin’s story is a true reflection and remembrance of their life journey, arduous effort, and distinguished accomplishment. Today, these prior generation of Chinese intellectuals and elite academics have faded away from the scene as described best by a Chinese phrase “大师远去再无大师” (the masters have faded away, no more masters), but their incredible legacy continues to inspire the future generations in pursuing their unfinished dreams for a better world.
