Yeung Adult Fiction (sorry)
Magical dragons in China, and a glass blowing apprentice who is more than she seems. It's a bit like Hogwarts in China - I think it might be classed as Yeung Adult Fiction (sorry). I rather like it. But not enough to pay money for book 2, sorry.

A truly magical adventure inspired by Chinese legend and Irish folklore
Zhi Ging is plucky and daring heroine, tormented by the horrible Iridill and shunned by her adopted community of Glassmiths because her hair doesn’t glow near dragons. But just because she’s unwanted in Fei Chui it doesn’t mean she won’t fit in somewhere. And the somewhere Zhi Ging is focused on is Hok Woh, an underwater school that offers its students the chance to become immortal. But gaining a place at the school full of jelly fish messengers, age shifting tutors and terrifying challenges brings a whole new set of problems. Pupils who fail challenges are disappearing and communities are turning against Hok Woh. There are rumours of dark forces and spirit magic gathering.Paper Dragons is richly created world with some wonderful characters that have stayed with me. My favourites are an adorable baby duckling sidekick called Malo and Gertie, the kindly store owner from the floating market. And obviously the villain of the piece, but I can’t reveal who that is. You’ll never guess, because this story is full of brilliant twists and turns right up to the action-packed finale.

My year 5s and 6s loved this original, magical adventure about Zhi Ging's adventures at her underwater school. Immersive and exciting.

Brilliant
Now this book. This is the kind of book that I would love to use in the curriculum for teaching. Theres’s intrigue and suspense, character development is fantastic and the world building is phenomenal. There is so much detail within this book that it can quite easily be read page by page and questions could be addressed after every page. This is a fantastic book for younger generations and I have already applied it to out teaching programme for next year. My class will thoroughly enjoy reading and working with this book.

Exciting fantasy adventure with great world-building
From the creepy prologue to the ending that does a great job of setting up for Book 2, this is a really fun fantasy adventure story. Relatable characters, exhilarating action scenes, exciting twists, and fantastic world-building. The young reader I bought it for really enjoyed it

Great world building with abrupt finish
A fresh take into a very saturated genre, especially of recent times.Though the start was slightly slow, with a lot of world building and character introduction, it soon fell into an intriguing plotline of what the main character could become and what she would learn to get there. The story ends quite abruptly, where it felt a little rushed to leave setup for a second book. However, overall it was a very pleasant read and I look forward to more of it!
