If You Love That Old Time Bluegrass / Folk Music
I was so excited to find this. I have the book for guitar and really enjoy it. Recently I have taken up the mandolin and with a little proficiency now I'm looking for songs to play. This is intermediate level material. If you are a beginner, persevere, you'll get there soon. It's a good idea to purchase the music cd which is sold separately so you can hear how the songs are played. There are a lot of different versions of old standards. If you like this kind of music I also recommend the Southern Mountain series that Mel Bay puts out. The songs are very authentic for Western NC (my original home) and there is a book with the same songs for each instrument. I have the dulcimer, guitar and mandolin books. There are also fiddle and banjo.

mandolin, grisman, shady grovde
A nice book that captures one side of the Grisman/Garcia collaboration; a little bit annoying that you have to have a mandola & a banjolin if you want to sound exactly like the cd-- but otherwise, it has some interesting, historical songs on it that will help broaden your mandolin knowledge and repertoire.

Album is great and inspiring, this book is less than that but perhaps still useful.
I didn't find this book nearly as useful as I hoped I would. I'm ,maybe not as good as I wish I were? Maybe. I have better luck with this album learning by ear than by reading. Though this book is not inaccurate so far as I can recall, just not as useful as I hoped.

Shady Grove mandolin method
This is a great method book if one wants to play the music from Shady Grove. I am not quite that advanced at this time. Will love it more later.

Grisman's Mandolin genius
It's Grisman and his mandolin solos from this timeless masterpiece of an album on which he is partnered with the immortal Jerry Garcia. What more needs to be said? If you don't know this album, then don't waste any more time before you listen; and if you're a mandolin player (of course you are, why else would you be reading this?) then you really will want to discover more about Grisman's playing. If you haven't already found it, a superb companion to this book is the "Tone Poems" album and book, also published by Mel Bay.
