Control Systems Engineering

Good aside from the Root Locus Stuff
I'm an electrical engineer and we went through this book (except for the last chapter) in my class on linear control systems. It's a very good book that is very readable and enjoyable. It explains things well and makes things easy to understand. Even friends who typically do not like reading the book read this book.My one major complaint with this book is found in chapters 8 & 9. When doing the examples on the root locus, the author just says "using MATLAB" and then makes the plot. This drove me and my friends crazy because on the exam we are doing it by hand, not "using MATLAB" and even if we were, you still should do these sorts of things by hand first to make sure that you have an understanding of the concepts before progressing to using software for your modeling. And especially in the examples- I mean come on, really? It's pure laziness. The rest of the book is great though and conceptually, the author does explain the root locus very well. It is just in the examples where a RL needs to be drawn that this book really falls short, IMO. This book remains one of my favorites (as someone who reads every book for every class), I'm sure I will read it (or at least parts of it) over again, and I would highly recommend it.

Very Clear Book
I ordered this as a supplement to my upper division mechanical feedback controls class and was very pleased. This book is very readable and after getting it was able to work through the first hundred or so pages with ease. Readability is the number one factor I look for in a text and I was pleased with this one. There were a few minor errors in some of the examples, which I was surprised to see given the that this book is in its 6th edition.Over all, great book, the best of three that I have used. Highly recommended

Just as good as the US version, at a fraction of the price. Warning: Pages are very thin for you highlighter happy students.

Thoroughly enjoyed this book
Thoroughly enjoyed this book. It served as a great reference for in class notes for my controls class. It is one of the better textbooks that I have used for my Aerospace classes. Neat, well laid out problems and topics.

Good book for hard class
Textbooks are hard to review, because we are required to purchase them and it is easy to tie in the quality of the course with the text. For me, this was a hard class, but I enjoyed it. The text was not always helpful to read and often made simple things sound complicated. That being said, this is a difficult subject to learn and teach. Everyone has their own way of visualizing what is happening. I find that it is better to play around with a microcontroller system until you figure out what's happening. It does integrate well with Simulink for Matlab which is nice.

Great for reading, but poor for solving
The text itself is pretty clear and provides good examples, however, when solving the problems at the end of each chapter, the author asks questions the reader will not understand. For example, it asks to draw a control system of a bathtub, but the solution for the bathtub requires a differential amplifier and float, which had not been explained leading up to the question. This turned a great book into a useless tool, because in order to begin to master the material a reader needs to be able to look at the problems and answer them based off the principles and lessons prior.
