Sibylle Baeier Melancholy Folk Gems (4.5 stars)
Sibylle Baier was primarily an actress, born in Germany, and these songs-she was living in the States by then-are the result of the inspiration she drew from a certain road trip with a friend, which led her to write and sing this low-fi and quite private set of recordings between 1970 and 1973.The first thing that might strike about these songs is the consistent sadness of their melodies, akin to the mood she had been in at the time, and the hushed yet expressive phrasing of these lyrics.More than anybody else, this album may remind you of Vashti Bunyan, particularly her debut "A Diamond Day." Although the Bunyan's songs were less imbued of somberness, they share a certain melancholy with these tunes. Also, you may think of what Sylvia Plath might have sound like if she chose to sing rather than poetry, more through its mood than the nature of its words.Still, the important thing is that this album, which had never been released before, presents a singer/songwriter of exquisite sensibility, sharing a very personal batch of songs that were never intended for "the public" and, perhaps due to that, conjure up an intimate and gorgeous portrait of a woman's inner life.If you are a friend of brave and intimate Folk, you will not be disappointed with this purchase.

In a perfect world she would be the opening act for Leonard ...
This remarkable CD is the find of the decade. Her voice is genuine and warm. Her lyrics have the utmost beauty in their beauty and poignancy. In a perfect world she would be the opening act for Leonard Cohen. Some of her spare melodies are reminiscent of Cohen's work. I highly recommend this CD. What a pity that she did not record any more songs. Amazing and ironic that she gave up her career in music to raise her son and it was her son who paid her back by making this CD a reality. It all works out in the end.

Contemplating the eternal evening
The appearance of a completely unexpected treasure, such as this quietly stunning album, serves as a reminder of the hidden wonders in this world. Which is a good description of its tone, in fact. Listening to these songs draws one into a wistfully austere & pure landscape, where the melancholy of the gathering twilight meshes with the secret thoughts & musings of the day, as the soul now approaches sleep in resigned yet grateful stillness. It's amazing to think that such beauty was consigned to a closet for some thirty years! We can only be thankful that it's finally available to the rest of us. A collection of astonishing emotional honesty, both stark & rich, most highly recommended!

couldn't ask for better songwriting. Very good winter folk
I absolutely adore this album. But be warned: whoever remastered it used the wrong kind of reverb (in my opinion). There's a lot of sibilance and if you listen to it on quality headphones, you'll hear more of it than you want to. But the music itself...couldn't ask for better songwriting. Very good winter folk.

Original lo-fi folk beauty
Beautiful sound that clearly influenced many groups of the 90s and 2000s, such as Movietone, Cat Power, and other lo-fi folkies with a light wispy sound.Simple vocal & guitar sound; deceptively simple in a sense, as the songs have a lot of depth and nuance to them, not just 'emo' or neo-folkie tweeness that can really irritate. Never cloying or cutesie like much of today's folkie/indie music; perfect music for a summer evening, just as the sun begins to fade.

Underrated album and singer
I was captivated by the haunting beauty of "I Lost Something In The Hills" (2nd track) and so wanted to discover the rest of the album. Didn't disappoint, this is a beautiful gentle album to relax to

Brilliant album, but extremely delayed shipping
This is a really lovely album which I was really looking forward to getting. I was expecting the delivery to take a while, but not as long as this. I still haven’t received the parcel as of yet. Very disappointing with the delivery.
