Difficult to watch but a very good film
When I first saw this at the multiplex way back in 2000 I didn’t much like it, but watching it again almost 20 years later as a grown-up it is actually a very good film , its well acted and very well made. having done some research on this it seems nobody knows exactly what happened to the Andrea Gale but I suspect what is depicted in the film is not too far from reality. It certainly isn’t a feel good film, the overall tone is downbeat and gritty and the ending is very sad, you want them to succeed so badly – it’s heartbreaking to watch as their situation goes from bad, to worse, to hopeless, but it certainly gives one an appreciation for what men like this go through and the risks they take.

A mixture of "Jaws/75" and "The big Blue/88" with huge waves
You get an insight into these Gloucester fisher lives. I originally come from Esbjerg/Denmark by the North Sea. Which in the old days was a fishing industry town, where one in 1978-80 easy could get a job the next day in the summertime. I recognize some of the beginning. There are a lot of reasons why, you should buy this DVD. Especially when one can see how it was made, in special feautures which is very comprehensive. In addition one get some really good view of the area of Gloucester Habour, Massachusetts (in which the start of the real movie was filmed) and The Sable Island. There are some nice details about names of the fishers which lost their lives since 1623, with respect to the history etc. - Boring, not at all. Though I must admit that the first 3/4 part of the movie is best. In the last part of it, it's only a fight between the fishers and the ocean. Too much water. 4 stars which I think is the right rating.

Not as good as i hoped
After seeing this film on numerous occasions, i decided to purchase on blu ray as my old dvd was starting to look grainy and not very clear. Being a big fan of the film i couldn't wait to watch it on blu ray, BUT i was hugely disappointed. I have difficultly hearing so require subtitles on when watching films, and after turning them on i needed to the screen bigger as it was too small to fit the size of my tv. After i did this i could NOT read the subtitles any more which meant i had to watch the film in a small screen. Which i might add is NOT the cinema experience i was after. On the plus side the film is a lot clearer to watch and sound's much louder, However would have been a lot better being a full size screen.

It's that bloke from E.R..."What goose", "erm, no George Cloony"
George Clooney is a fisherman. Really? - you know what, yeah, and a damn fine job at making what potentially could have been a boring film fairly exciting. If the preface had said something like "Some blokes take a beaten up boat fishing for the last big catch of the season, only to find themselves heading straight for a hurricane, subsequently find themselves in the "perfect storm", now will they ever catch home?" - I probably wouldn't even bothered watching it. But alas it's pretty good, not one for the cinema I think but a must have for movie dvd collectors.

Tedious in spite of spectacular photography
I admired the performances of the actors but had great difficulty in watching it all through.
