Q: Will this make it easier to remove the coupling nut from my toilet which is in a very tight space?

Can't say for sure on the toilet. I use mine for the shaft logs on my boat which are in a very tight space and hard to get. It should work for your coupling as it is offset, and as long as you still have a little bit of swing room to turn the wrench.

Q: Anyone use this wrench on 1 inch unions in combination with a standard pipe wrench?

Yes it is a hex wrench with smooth jaw

Q: How well is this going to grab an octagon?

I don't know it is made for hex fittings however as long as the octagon has opposite parallel sides it should work.
