Mojave National Preserve Map (National Geographic Trails Illustrated Map, 256)

I like this map except that, like many others have said, the Mojave Road is not on one panel. NatGeo easily could have managed the print space to make this happen. With the Mojave Road being a major destination for the 4WD/overland crowd and one of the main features of any Mojave map, the route could have all been placed on the north panel and shifted the text info to the south panel. I’m recommend finding a copy of Tom Harrison’s Mojave National Preserve Rev map to use in conjunction with the NatGeo map. Other than that, I like every other aspect of this map.

These National Geographic Trails Illustrated Maps are always very good quality. I plan on crossing the Mojave Desert on the Old Government Road some day and will carry this map to supplement my GPS and other mapping software.

Rather than have the map on one side, the map is divided front/back with north and south sections of Mojace preserve. Although very detailed with different roads (off road and paved) it gets a little hard to decipher one from the other in crisscrossing areas.Would NOT reccomend if you're trying to plot your route for Mojave Road (like I am). On the south page (back) Mojave road is shown from Fort piute through Zzyzx/Soda Springs.

I had a previous version of this map that I have used for years and years. The Trails Illustrated maps have been companions to me for at least a decade.But there's the problem: my existing map is just fine. It's not torn, there are no coffee stains, and it's in great condition. They build these things to last.So my concern was: is there any point to upgrade to a more recent map release?The answer is yes. The detail and information on this map are well worth the investment. The material is even more robust (plastic infused paper or something) than my existing version. Or maybe it just hasn't been out in the sun enough yet.

Map with UTM grids. Very useful for land nav.

I did not care for this map at all. It is double sided which is rather annoying. If you're using it for the Old Mojave Road, buy another map. You have to flip back and forth on this one to figure out where the road goes, and it is not marked very well. If you're using this map for other areas of the preserve, I'm sure it's great for that. If you want to do the 140 long Mojave Trail, buy the Mojave National Preserve map by Tom Harrison.

As always, a beautiful and well made map from NatGeo. Almost too nice to take out on the trail!
