Its always best advice to use an IR illuminator about 20-25 percent more than you need. IR illuminators are great at improving your existing cameras night vision - as with any CCTV camera the IR beam is quite narrow, so you will end up with darker edges. However, if there is something important in the edges - adding an IR illuminator will light up this area for the camera, so it will see that area better at night also.
