Hard won insights from a life well lived.
" The Spiritual Nature of Animals " gripped me by the throat on the first page. That grip persisted with varying( Thank God ) intensity as she wove personal experiences with an immense range of spiritual exploration. The physical, mental, and emotional bruising veterinarians trek throughis surprisingly unexpected.Dr Karlene Stange graduated 7 minutes ahead of me. Neither one of us, probably not one soul of ourVeterinary School class expected the depth of joy, despair, and mystery ahead of us.Reading her book I wept for her, and me, for our losses. She made me laugh and smile for the adventures we have passed, and for the help we have given. The solace from her insights comforts me, and gives me courage.Rich Fisher DVM

You will not be disappointed!
"The Spiritual Nature of Animals," written Karlene Stange, DMV, is a fascinating discussion of the spirituality of animals, told in a very personal way, by an emergency veterinarian responding to calls at all times of the day and night to provide medical treatment to her patients and comfort to their owners (some very colorful animals and owners I might add), which often required her to end the lives of her patients by euthanasia. You feel your presence in these stories, like you were right there, looking over her shoulder, a part of the moment. They are as easy reading as if you were speaking with your best friend about your last favorite adventure, feeling the joy and the sadness of each story. In between all of these stories, she weaves a concise and well documented discussion of the worlds religious and philosophical beliefs about whether animals have "consciousness" or "Spirit," all in flowing words that belie the substantial research she clearly undertook in her quest of whether animals truly have a "Spirit." I usually only read Spy books, wanting to get to the end as fast as I can to find out what happens. You will want to take your time to read this book! I read it in four time periods. You will not be disappointed!

If You Like Temple Grandin & Deepak Chopra, You'll Also Really Like Karlene Stange
I read a news story about Dr. Stange and The Spiritual Nature of Animals in the Farmington (N.M.) Daily-Times and immediately ordered the book. She's a large animal vet in Durango, Colo. Not only does she bring a scientific perspective of dealing with sick, injured and dying animals and the huge range of emotions they express when going through this process – whether cats, dogs, horses, cows – but she has done two decades of her own personal research and practice in Christianity, Hinduism, Buddhism, Vedanta, Aboriginal and Native American spirituality, enlightenment, growth, quantum mechanics and other spiritual and scientific disciplines. She discusses everyone from Fritjof Capra, Deepak Chopra, Temple Grandin to Abraham-Hicks and many others, and makes it all make sense, especially if you're a little familiar with them. She writes with ease and generosity without any preachiness, weaving into it her own stories about what it's been like to be a country vet in southwestern Colorado and the people and animals she's encountered. I read a great book last year that I gave away to lots of friends. I just order 12 copies of this one to give away this Christmas. It's my favorite reading since that last one. This is my first Amazon review.

Definitely a keeper book..
I loved it! I received mine before Christmas and finished it knowing I was ordering two as gifts for my friends. I have read many spiritual books the past years on animal energy and communicating. Having had the pleasure and comfort of many dogs, cats and birds since my childhood and into my senior years.. They added another dimension of love and comfort as they have for many us here on earth. She wrote a very wise, compassionate and comforting book. Giving much insight into different religions and cultures and their view of the big picture. Connecting it all very nicely. This book also added insight into the ranching and farming communities and how they view their own beloved animal friends. Working and playing beside their human counterparts.. Definitely a great read, learning and enjoying at the same time in this comprehensive book!!

Dr. Karlene Stange is a true healer.
This book is an extraordinary exploration of not only her work as a country veterinarian but her own spiritual journey. Written with compassion from a perspective and the experience of a seeker. I have witnessed her remarkable ability to connect with animals first hand, first with my cat who absolutely loved her healing acupuncture and now with my dog who is blind but seems to know exactly when we drive into her driveway and tries to jump out of my car to get to her. I highly recommend this book to all who care for and care about animals. Priscilla

Honest and thought provoking
I read this book on my kindle and then bought the paper copy so I could re-read and rethink many passages. Very insightful. Made me work on becoming less judgemental of others and at the same time I feel encouraged to trust my own instincts more. Even though I do not re-read books anymore, I know I will this one (I will just skip chapter 2). It is a balanced combination of personal experiences, teachings of different religions and philosophies and explanation of science.
