Probably returning this one
Slid right through the heat shields (“flavorizer” bars?) of my Char-Broil Performance gas grill and landed in the drip pan. Hot, dangerous chore trying to get that out of there. Had to shut the gas off, etc. with the meat already on the grill. Not happy about that! Too narrow and/or too heavy.Couple other issues...It’s cast iron and it seems to take quite awhile to get hot. I recommend NOT soaking your chips before hand or you’ll be waiting a dog’s age for this thing to get smoking. I had soaked my chips for 30 minutes prior to use. After all that. It didn’t put out much smoke anyway. It put out enough to make me sneeze but when I’d lift the grill lid, smoke wasn’t pouring out like I’m used to seeing when I’d smoke things on my Weber charcoal grill. This box did; however, burn the wood chips to ash. So the wood burnt too hot and too quickly to be really smoky (and that’s with wet chips!). By the way, I may be just as much a fool as the next guy for soaking my chips anyway because soaking the chips is an often repeated myth. It’s a waste of time because the wood doesn’t soak up enough water to make any difference. Bottom line, this box takes a long while to get started, is loose and wobbly, and gave me mediocre results. In the end, I couldn’t taste any smoke on the ribs. Overall, I’m pretty disappointed with this smoker box. Think I paid about $12 a few days ago. Now the price has doubled! LOL! Not worth it.UPDATE: Tried it again today. Mesquite chips. NOT soaked. Still sucks! Nothing more than a whisp of smoke. No flavoring. Took another star off. Can’t seem to make this work.

You need more than one
On the fence between 2 and 3 stars. It's smaller than I expected and only holds literally a (small) handfull of chips. Just used it for the first time with hardwood coals to make a brisket, some burgers, tofu, and brats. Doesn't generate much smoke but I can taste it a little bit in the items that were closest to the box but not at all in anything that wasn't right next to it. To get strong flavor across the board I think you need at least 2 of these and probably 3 or 4. Might be different with higher flame but I was cooking low and slow for the brisket. My brisket is still cooking so I'm not sure, but I imagine it'll be smokier than the others bc it has been on for longer (going on 6 hours now). Either way, I think I'll need to get a couple more. One upside to that is, I think you should be able to have micro environments and have smokier flavor on one side of the grill etc. but if you want a strong flavor across the whole grill.. like I said: you definitely need at least 2, maybe 4--or just buy a bigger smoke box. Downside is, I didn't see one on Amazon that had such sturdy construction. I'd rather buy 4 well designed cast iron smoke boxes that are too small than buy one or two right sized ones and have to buy them again a couple seasons from now.TL/DR: sturdy cast iron but you'll need to buy at least 2 of these or get a larger lower quality box.

YUM, YUM, Jack Daniels Steak!
Rugged and heavy duty, these cast iron wood chip boxes will outlast your grill. Made to nestle between the grills burner shields below the grate. Fill with wood chips moistened with water, juice or your favorite bourbon. Start the grill 1/2 hour before the meat. The smoking boxes will impart a definite smokehouse flavor to your fish, burgers or steaks. I highly recommend cast iron for it's durability and longevity. Lid has notches to cradle the V shape for use with charcoal.

Perfectly suble wood grilled flavor on steaks.
This smoker box works perfect. It's sits snugly between the burner baffles on my propane grill. I seem to get two good grilling sessions with this box. The first provides the most pronounced smoke flavor. It obviously works really well for steaks, but also I've come to really love the slight oak flavor it imparts on corn on the cob. I was not expecting this to work as well as it does, but am considering buying several more as gifts, as so many people have complimented us on the oak flavor from our grill.

Well made heavy cast-iron
I took this out of the package 10 minutes ago and I’m already very happy with it. It’s heavy cast iron.. so I expect it to last longer than my previous steel boxes. The angle of the cast iron box is perfectly matched to my Weber grill. Another review were on here mentioned the box falling through his flavorizor bars. That reviewer was using a cheap charbroil grill. There’s a good possibility his burners are so far spaced out that an angled box would never work. This thing was clearly designed to work well with higher and grills like Weber without an issue. The same problem probably caused that other reviewer‘s issue with heating the box. My previous smoker box is set on top of the flavorizer bars. This box sits snug up against them. That should help the box heat up quickly.

Good Value Great Quality Low Smoke
I purchased this item specifically because it was cast iron and in my mind it had to be better. My husband had never smoked before, but wanted to, so I purchased this for Father's Day. It did produced smoke, but not a lot. He ended up putting the wood chips in a rolled up aluminum pan next to this box.

Will outlast several gas grills.
Very heavy cast iron. Wood chips smoke perfectly. Either use it sitting between two flame deflectors or set the lid ontop of the grate and cradle the chip holder on the lid with the brackets on the bottom side of the lid. Only thing is you'll lose a little grill area using this second method.

No smoke out of these
Thought these would be good but the cast iron is too thick and never generates smoke. I tried soaking the wood chips and not soaking them. Neither variation generates smoke. I put these right in between the burner and flavor bar on my Weber Genesis grill for 3 cooks and really never got any smoke. My little Weber smoker box that is thin metal generates a ton of smoke compared to this thing.Won’t be using in the future. Pretty disappointed as I was hoping the thicker metal would burn slower.

Super well made, very impressive.
Nothing not to like really if you have enough heat to start the damp wood burning. It's really designed to set on coals or near them.I think people struggle with a gas bbq as it doesn't produce enough localised heat. Will withstand a 1-megaton blast, so it'll probably outlive you..

Too thick, heavy doesn’t smoke or fit.
Far too heavy to sit between burners, tips them outwards. Metal too thick to that wood struggles to burn let alone smoke. I bought Weber one that sits on top of two burners, far more effective and smokes beautifully. Wouldn’t recommend cast iron one.
