Choice Theory: A New Psychology of Personal Freedom

The bible of choice theory
Can we really think ourselves better? Yes we can. A good read for budding psychologists. Hypochondriacs won’t like it.

A light bulb moment
Fantastic book that I am in the process of reading for the second time.Lots of thought provoking stuff not least that choice is freedom so we all have freedom, maybe not in terms of where we live or how much money we have, but undoubtedly our attitude to it. I have also read 'positive addiction' & 'getting together & staying together', all fantastic reads. Its funny how we spend all our lives trying to amend other peoples behavior yet we can only amend our own but rarely bother.

Item arrived promptly and secure. Attended a conference where this approach was highlighted. I wanted to explore its approach for myself and for my work with young people. Started the book last week and am finding theory very pertinent and will incorporate into my personal and professional life.

Excellent
I use this book, as a therapist, frequently with clients. It is lay man friendly, not full of psychobabble and very common sense. It empowers the client on how to manage their lives whether it is depression, anger or relationship management. This book is the tool that was used when I was the client and helped me take responsibility for my life and start to thrive. I graduated with a 2:1 honours degree in counselling and psychotherapy last year.

Nice idea but not for everyone
My counsellor recamended this book. I read it twice, to let it all sink in.While I will say that it is interesting, and does have its place, it woul dbe hard to implement it all in a world where no one else is implementing this knowledge!I have taken pieces from it and incorporated it into my life, and I have discarded other bits. My counsellor is trying to get me to follow this program in its purest form, he is fanatical about it, which is maybe coloring my persepctive.Sadly, I am human. I have to let my boss control certain elements of my life, because he does not follow choice theory. Same with others. While I know that they cannot control me, and I cannot control others, I cannot start preaching to people. So, nice bit of theory, and great if you can work with some of it.

Choice Theory Helps
I learned about Choice Theory in university and was interested in it. Later I met with a counselor who specialized in reality therapy and CBT. We will sometimes go back to what I learned in this book during our session when it’s relevant and I have to say it helps. It gives you quite a bit of power to have a choice in all of your actions, thoughts, and sometimes emotions. With that however, it does give you quite a bit of responsibility in that you are not always a victim, and you may be working against yourself more than you think.Glasser has some questionable other beliefs, but I don’t think you have to believe everything he’s saying to take something away from reality therapy. It is very similar to CBT as it focuses on your actions, not so much your past, and allows you to choose more personally beneficial actions instead of getting caught staying in patterns that do not serve you.As a young woman of color with quite a bit of personal trauma, it took me some time to get through my past behaviors, and I still have work to do, but I’ve appreciated how Glasser’s approach, CBT, and help of my counselor have shown me a better way of mentally processing things.Overall, I think that if you’d like to help yourself this book is good, but works best with a therapist or counselor who practices CBT and/or reality therapy.
