Cover Girl [DVD] [1944]

Rita Hayworth at her best
A gorgeous, very sweet and often overlooked movie, and an interesting one to watch, given that it was filmed within the constraints of wartime. Look out for the early exposition of why the young, fit Gene Kelly character was not fighting in the war, and for the clever and almost total absence of young male characters. The Cover Girl sequences must have been especially dazzling at the time, when real-life glamour was thin on the ground. It's an unsophisticated, one-dimensional story, but who cares? The musical numbers are great: Long Ago and Far Away is a classic song, Cover Girl is lusciously shot, and look out for Gene Kelly's razor-sharp precision in the alter-ego sequence. All in all it makes a lovely movie for a rainy Sunday afternoon :)

ENTERTAINING
Although not in the top flight of Hollywood musicals, it's difficult to resist Gene Kelly whenever he dances - and he does so to very good effect here. Story lines in musicals are virtually always of secondary importance, and this film is no exception to that rule, but with Rita Hayworth in her prime (in gorgeous Technicolor) and some decent dance routines you won't go wrong by seeing this offering from 1944, provided you are partial to musicals. The music itself is not particularly memorable, but certainly up to the job. A fun film.

Superb 'Cover Girl 'Blu-ray from Eureka
Lots has been writen about this superb film thats Lot Lot Betta than LA LA . This Eureka Blu-ray restoration is superb ...bright colours sharp picture, slight evidence of grain but what do you expect for a seventy year old film which is as up there with the best of the era Din't spot any blemishes. Well worth the upgrade from DVD.

Cover Girl: A particularly lovely Rita!
A classic movie with a classy look from one of my favourite decades. If you ask me, the 1940's was an era in which women really knew how to dress (hats, gloves, skirt suits, etc.) and wear make-up. Even just the way lipstick was put on and worn back then was in a league of its own - There's definitely something superb about the so called 'cupid's curve' in terms of the latter! Call me 'shallow' if you like but I think such things deserve some recognition as well as the film itself.,Despite the obviously terrible and devastating presence and consequences of WW2, that period of Hollywood remains fabulously frozen in time. Rita Hayworth, the Cover Girl herself, certainly was one gorgeous lady! No wonder became a sizzling, shining star of more than just the silver screen! The story is interesting, racy and amusing at times and generally entertaining but, again, it's the actress playing the title role who completely steals the show - with full-onfemininity - for me!

What a stunner
Saw the first 15mins of this on t.v. last week and had to buy it. Rita Hayworth has got to be one of the most beautiful woman ever. The film is great and picture quality great. Also comes with dvd version.

Simple plot but amazing execution
Easily the best of Rita Hayworth's musicals, Cover Girl seems to have become a forgotten film, but its one of the best non-MGM wartime musicals, with gorgeous Technicolor, some good songs courtesy of George and Ira Gershwin and at least one standout number, the Shadow Dance, which still amazes with its technique as Gene Kelly dances with his own reflection. It's all the more impressive when you consider that the camera is in almost constant motion at a time when motion control camera systems didn't exist, so the amount of effort put in to matching both the camera moves and the dance steps twice over must have been incredible. For decades this was only available in black and white due to the deterioration of the colour negative, but the film has been beautifully restored to something close to its Technicolor glory in a fine DVD transfer, though it's well worth shelling out the extra for Twilight Time's limited edition (3000 copies) region-free Blu-ray release which manages to improve on it. While it's certainly not as vivid as crisp as it was when new, considering how poorly the film was treated for years it's easily the best home video presentation.

I love this Technicolor Columbia 1944 musical with Gene Kelly
I love this Technicolor Columbia 1944 musical with Gene Kelly, Rita Hayworth and Phil Silvers. I have seen it many times and have multiple copies in playback formats. I have the US Blu Ray version but because there was differences in the UK blu ray I decided to get it too. I find the color transfer from what ever source materials still exist were excellent and the sound clear and vibrant. I recommend this version which also gives you a DVD as an extra.

Enjoyable.
A superb restoration of a most enjoyable old film only flawed by a generally mediocre music score with the exception of “Long Ago And Far Away”. Recommended with that caveat.
