A fantastic book
I like that the author sort of went outside the box in the method of portraying Alexander. I like the outsider view of Alexander looking in-I think it makes it feel authentic. This book was quite enjoyable.

Alexander the hero or conquerer?
Cameron does his research and weaves a fantastic tale. I have read a handful of novels telling Alexander's tale. Though I enjoyed the others, I trust Cameron's research, connections, judgements, and writing ability. Alexander had to be flawed to do such great things and yet lose his army, the most trusted, in the end. If you want to experience what it was like to be witness to one of the greatest feats, read this dramatic memoir historical fiction come one who was there.

Amazing storytelling
Christian Cameron is such a wonderful storyteller. I loved his Chivalry series and I was so fascinated with this book up until the ending. I wanted to know what it was that made Alexander "great" and I guess I expected a heroic tale. This was just so opposite from chivalry and it was just so depressing to see men becoming so barbaric. Especially now when we thought we were so beyond that as human beings but here we are being pulled back into war and tyranny.

Another Hit!
Although a long narrative, it was well worth the read. Cameron, again, presents us with the realities of the 4th century world; the combat, interpersonal connections and political intrigue and, what I thought was the greatest, the personality (egomaniacal) of Alexander and the why and how of his quick (relatively) conquest of the known world. From ancient tomes to readable narrative, Cameron takes the reader across Greece, Turkey, Iraq/Iran, Afghanistan, to India and back, standing amongst the men who went with him and survived he and the many foes they faced.

Excellent read
Really enjoyed this. The "take away" I had with this that I did not expect was a different view of Alexander.. a man who seemed to need the adrenalin of battle to "live". It now makes me understand that it could have been one of his "inner circle" that might have poisoned him since he it was clear he did not want his wars to end and if you "left him" there might be consequences. Good read.

Lengthy but very interesting
This is the story of Alexander the Great told from the point of view of one of his generals Ptolomey, who ended up ruling Egypt. It was a rather long book but gave some insights that I found very interesting. I had read several books on Greek warfare some of which did not take a very favorable view of Alexander. I had not thought about the fact that Alexander was a very young King and that another one of his generals was his equal in power at the generals conferences when the campaign to conquer Persia began. He was not the all powerful king that i had supposed. One very interesting aspect of the book is that it actually got into how the army was supplied . Besides the food which was a constant there was also the need for horses and mules and wagons. All of which were needed to keep the army on the march. Even the idea of replacements and how they would reach an army in Afghanistan when they had to start out in Macedonia were treated in the book. This does not mean that it was a wooden military manual, it was not. But if your horses are dead or dying and you must have more how you get them makes for a much more riveting and realistic military novel.

Maintaining Momentum
Christian Cameron His attention to detail describing the logistics required to campaign in the time of Macedonia is engrossing. Every page leaves one wanting more . His descriptions of the different types of Cavalry , including the Elephant Heavy Cavalry are enlightening. I have read all but two of his books and I hope he continues to write.

Long book on a familiar topic but done as well as anyone
A good read on a well trodden topic but I suppose he needed to take his shot. Not quite up to the Killer of Men series but I would still recommend it, especially if you haven't dwelt in Alexander's world before. Christian writes well and follows history as much as that is possible.
