Lonely PlanetSicily: Perfect for exploring top sights and taking roads less travelled (Travel Guide)

Comprehensive coverage and plenty of local detail.

I used to love Lonely Planet travel guides - full of detailed info on places to visit, bars, restaurants including less well known or characterful venues. These new format guides have been completely dumbed down. They only cover main sites - nothing off the beaten track like the old Red Lighg District in Catania. Hardly any info on bars and restaurants - max 3 suggestions per city instead of the district by district guides. They include more photos now and it feels like they’re trying to copy DK Eyewitness guides but not as good. Will only be buying old editions of Lonely Planet going forward!

I’ll be brief - just like the book. Sicily is a huge place and this book doesn’t even scratch the surface. A 5 minute read that will live beside the toilet for guests to read - or if they run out of paper. Just doesn’t really tell you anything… ‘this is Palermo and this is that big volcano thing’ that’s about it.

New format which has very little detail. Might be fine you are happy with very superficial guide with lots of maps and photos - I like the latter but I also need the recommendations as well as before. Have always bought LP over RG but now need to order RG for Sicily. Feel a bit sad.

prefer the previous outlook of lonelyplanet guides...not a lot of information about the sights...full of unnecessary tips where to eat the best canolli in each town....
