important album
Enslaved are one of norways most respected black metal bands, forming in 1991 they are still together today and remain highly influential, their sound has drifted away from black metal somewhat over the years and in fact many would consider this album to be more in the shade of progressive black metal and indeed viking metal,i cant disagree with either of those statements,so in 1997 eld was released, their third album and eld is norwegian for fire just in case anyone wishes to know. The album opens with a true mindsweeping epic in '793,slaget om lindisfarne',for the first three minutes you get kepboards, then extremely melodic metal and then fierce screams and back again, awe inducing indeed. The album has lots of melodic moments to give the album a feel of beauty among the viciousness that it can unravel as well, songs like the stunning 'kvasirs blod' will send shivers soaring as the riff here is immaculate and the melodies flow throughout, lead singer grutle has variety to his singing styles and is one of the reasons why enslaved are so vital to the metal world.eld is vital as well,it mightnt have the glorious tunes of latter day emperor but in saying that they aint trailing behind emperor much with this.

My favourite of theirs, superb album
Enslaved have never made a bad or mediocre album, but to me this is their masterpiece...as a fan of the original, hate-fuelled and very "pagan" black metal pioneers of the early nineties, as well as of some latecomers worthy of attention like enslaved, emperor and early satyricon, and of the Bathory style of "viking metal" largely separate from the black metal scene, I feel this album has the perfect balance of both worlds...All the rage and nostalgia of ferocious black metal is clearly here, but so is the "epic", moving Viking metal...every track stands out, but fits in with the album as a whole, and there are so many memorable melodies and choruses on here that make it one of the best Viking metal albums ever...It is probably one of the very few enslaved releases that can be considered fairly normal black metal...in fact I would only really include this, Blodhem and possibly the first album and EP, as Frost before this was too varied and experimental to be just a black metal album...despite this, the album is actually pretty progressive and technical, and ahead of its time...the drums on here are one of the best bits, being rather jazzy in places, giving the musicianship a level of complexity on par with Ved Buens Ende and post-Euronymous Mayhem...I even love the nice, simple sepia album cover, everything about this is perfect to me...shame they moved away from this angrier Viking style and away from the Norse lyrics but the new albums are still brilliant

Eld is arguably Enslaved's finest opus to date
This album combines unflawed yet powerful and evocative vocals with more orthodox screeches and howls of the viking/black metal genre and powerful guitars and synth. It is a much more mature album than the last two, and is outstandingly original given the commercialism of today's black metal. Definitely a necessary purchase!

This CD introduced me to viking metal
This was the first Enslaved cd I ever bought and I could not stop listening to it. Its 2013 and that was 7 years ago, I'm a late bloomer. I've been buying their stuff ever since and they never disappoint. This seems to be the album where their music became more progressive which I think was a good thing. This is truly to me a Viking metal band with some black metal Thrown in, their earlier work was more black metal influenced.I really like this album and still listen to it.These guys even look like a Viking horde ready to raid the nearest Christian monastery.Hail Odin!!!!!!!!!!!

Nordic Kings
Eld begins with the song "793 (Slaget Om Lindisfarne)" and as the eerie sounds of the opening orchestral keyboards and distant tribal drumming drift from the stereo, it signals the beginning of something big, something epic, something profound. at the 3:40 mark of the song, all hell breaks loose and the foggy misty shores have been invaded by the furious storming of this Viking horde known as Enslaved! the pace gallops along with fiercely strummed guitars and mournful vocals echoing the tale:"Strokes from the oars could be heard, beautiful ships gushed through the sea. Like a wind from the North, our ancestors reached the shore. Men from Hordaland, Rogaland, and Agder gathered for battle in common. Proud men with no fear. Strokes from the sword crushed the skull of the christian."wow. what a way to start an album. Enslaved's previous record, Frost, was limited in it's production, but contained some excellent songs and showed great potential, but i doubt that anybody was expecting their next album to be so monumental and so inspired. in fact, Eld's first track alone (all 16 minutes of it) is so unreal and vast in it's historical relevance and musical scope that the rest of the album almost pales in comparison to it. you'll find yourself going back and listening again and again. but once you continue with the rest of Eld you'll find it to be an utter masterpiece of supremely written and brilliantly composed viking battle metal!i can't say enough great things about Enslaved. all their albums are treasures of excellent music and thought provoking imagery. but if you are new to this band, Eld is a really great place to start your journey. in my opinion, this album, as well as Blodhemn and Mardraum -Beyond The Wthin-, represent the purest essence and most focused period of this band. Enslaved's golden trilogy, if you will. Essential Metal! Hail!

Profound Viking/Black Metal
Enslaved is a band that has never dissapointed me in any of their albums. Their musicianship and songwriting is way above a lot of band's in this genre. They do more in one song than most band's do in an entire album. Song arrangements are complex and staggering, IMO. But, that is just one factor of this band that is impressive. Enslaved create music with an indelible passion. I always "feel" like a Viking after listening to this. I raise my mug of warm mead, and my sword is drenched in my enemies blood. I then bed my lady in a maze of orgasmic sweat and love. Alright, so most think I'm nuts, but this is how Enslaved's music affects me. My beautiful woman never complains. So, there you go, add to cart NOW. Btw, the first song-793 The Battle of Lindisfarne is simply the best Viking epic maybe ever written.
